DGA Announces Best Director Nominees: Greta Gerwig is Only Female Nominee

At the Golden Globes last Sunday, while announcing the best Director category alongside Ron Howard, Natalie Portman’s pointed dig about the “all five-male” nominees stirred up a firestorm on social media and was one of the highlights of the show.

Today the Directors Guild of America announced their five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2017 and they did only a little better, with one female nominee: Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird.”

For the first time the DGA included Nominees for First-Time Feature Film Director Category but sadly none of them were directed by women. Jordan Peele was nominated twice in both categories for “Get Out.”

The other best director nominees are Guillermo del Toro, Martin McDonagh and Christopher Nolan. Steven Spielberg did not make the cut for “The Post,” nor did Paul Thomas Anderson for “Phantom Thread.” And sadly nor did Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman.”

Director Thomas Schlamme, President of the Directors Guild of America, says in the official press release announcing nominees that “2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the DGA Awards, and filmmaking has reached new heights with each passing year. These nominees embody the excellence that comes to life when unique vision, craft and skill come together in pursuit of masterful storytelling,” said Schlamme. “Being nominated by their peers is what makes this award especially meaningful for directors, and I congratulate all of the nominees for their outstanding work.”
