The Lord of the Rings trilogy is widely regarded as one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time, so why re-create it? Amazon want to return us to Middle Earth once more for a brand new TV series.
Warner Bros Television and Amazon Studios are in talks to produce a TV adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkinen’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ novels. We’ve recently got reports from both Variety and Deadline that talks are currently in a very early stage with Amazon being the frontrunners to create the series. According to these reports both Netflix and Game of Thrones creators HBO were approached to produce the series, but Amazon seem by far the most likely.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is known to be a huge fan of Science Fiction and Fantasy so he would be incredibly passionate about this project. This reflects why he is personally involved in the negotiations which are currently ongoing. He visions a LOTR series could be a way to potentially fill the huge gap left after Game of Thrones ends following its eighth season on HBO. Whether it would prove to be anywhere near as successful, that remains to be seen.

Obviously as the negotiations are in such early stages there isn’t much more to say. Do you think a series would work or do you think Amazon should venture to other fantasy novels to adapt. Maybe they could adapt the First Law by Joe Abercrombie? The Broken Empire trilogy by Mark Lawrence? There’s definitely plenty of options.
Beginning in 2001, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy proved to be a global phenomenon grossing over $2.9 billion. The third installment The Return of the King was the most successful and attained 11 Oscars, the joint record alongside Titanic and Ben-Hur. Is there need for a TV series?
