Unbelievably, we’re about three months away from the 89th Academy Awards and I thought I would resume a series I began shortly before this years Oscars: profiling film composers who have won for Best Original Score across the years.

Alexandre Desplat wins Best Original Score for The Grand Budapest Hotel

Alexandre Desplat had been nominated for Best Original Score a total of seven times before finally winning for his work on The Grand Budapest Hotel (previous nominations: The Queen; The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; Fantastic Mr. Fox; The King’s Speech; Argo; Philomena; and The Imitation Game.) His win for The Grand Budapest Hotel was well-deserved: the score is full of whimsy and charm.

I’m super excited to hear Desplat’s work in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), perhaps this will earn him a second Oscar win. Only time will tell.
