Cover Girl – As the fourth episode of Candy begins, Pat Montgomery (Timothy Simons) checks for monsters under Jason’s bed. Jason (Dash McCloud) says his mother scares them away. Once Pat deals with that, he finds a note from Candy reminding him she’ll be home tomorrow. He puts on the same David Soul song Candy was listening to earlier in the season. He sits down and looks through old pictures and cards. Candy (Jessica Biel) returns home a bit later. In court, Pat is asked about buying flowers and a card after finding out about Candy’s affair. He admits he blamed himself and thinks he still does. He believes a big part of her relationship with Allan was having a friend and someone to talk to.
Pat might not have been open enough and Candy might’ve thought she was taking her for granted after ten years of marriage. He says they were waking through it though. The defense attorney, Don Crowder (Raul Esparza), asks whether Pat had seen his wife in any verbal altercation or physical violence of any kind. He quickly says no. He loves his wife and stands by her because she is a nonviolent person. On the night of Betty’s death, Deffibaugh (Justin Timberlake) receives a call in the middle of the night. He goes to the Gore house with a camera and begins taking pictures of potential evidence. He goes inside where he introduces himself to Richard (Adam Bartley), Jerry (Bruce McKinnon), and Lester (Jose Miguel Vasquez).
They tell him how Allan called and asked them to have a look before they found the baby and took her away. Richard explains that little Valerie cried so long that her voice went hoarse. Allan is in St. Paul for business. Steve thanks them for the information and sends them home. He takes more pictures as his partner says they did whatever they could to help protect prints. Steve wishes he’d brought more than one roll of film. He finds a bloody shoeprint. He believes it is different from the others so he orders the officers to cut out the square of linoleum to take with them as evidence. Steve takes a picture of the handprint on the refrigerator door.
Deputy Dave (Shaun Lynch) shows him the sunglass lens he found, but Steve isn’t happy because he picked it up. Steve scolds him and makes him put it back where he found it. Steve gets a picture of it before learning there is more blood in the bathroom. He speculates that the killer barely cleaned up, left the murder weapon, and took time to shower. Deputy Denny Reese (Jason Ritter) reminds him that they did this while a baby cried in the background. The next day, Candy wakes up next to Pat who kisses her and says good morning. Allan Gore (Pablo Schreiber) is harassed by journalists when he returns home. He is introduced to Deputy Deffibaugh of the Collin County Sheriff’s Department. Steve tells him there is more to it than his wife being shot.
After they go inside, Steve tries to find out what the rest of Betty’s day would’ve been like although Allan doesn’t know much. Allan tells him how Betty called his boss to try to convince him not to send him away for the weekend. She didn’t like it when he went on work trips. When asked what happens on these trips, Allan says just work. Steve questions whether there has been anyone outside the nuptials. Allan tells him that Betty had a one-night stand a few years ago. Allan denies that he ever had an affair. After Steve asks whether someone could’ve seen Betty yesterday, Allan says Candy was here in the morning and she said everything seemed fine. He wonders if it was some maniac. Steve says it is possible, but the fact that there is no forced entry or break-in suggests otherwise.
Allan can’t think of anyone who didn’t like Candy very much. Steve would like to see his bank statements even though he has an alibi of being out of town. Meanwhile, Candy has dinner with the kids and her husband. Pat proves to the kids that they’re magnetic. When the phone rings, Candy seems a bit shaken. She finally comes back to reality and answers the phone. Linda (Coley Company) asks her what type of maniac is in their neighborhood. Sandra (Sharon Conley), Sherry (Jessie Mueller), and others call her to discuss the crime as well.
Christina (Antonella Rose) returns home to her father who tries to tell her that something terrible has happened. Candy and Pat enter as he tries to explain what happened to her daughter. Candy zones out as Allan tells his daughter that her mother is gone and went to heaven. She helps comfort Allan and Christina. Allan thanks them and says it was a real comfort knowing Christina was with them. As they leave, Pat thinks it’d be a good idea to check all locks and windows. Elaine (Jamie Ann Allman) visits the Gore house to help with dinner. Now that she is single again, she knew she could make dinner at the drop of a hat. She tells Allan that he is going to need someone in the long term since he doesn’t know how to change diapers.
Elaine promises to show him how to do it. Once Christina goes to her room, Elaine tells Allan that he needs to speak to a lawyer because they always look at the husband first. It is sometimes insurance or another woman, but it is always love or money. She asks whether he took out any large sums recently because they might think he is a contract killer. Later, Allan calls Steve to tell him about the traveler’s checks he took out yesterday. They were going to go on vacation to Europe. Then, he tells Steve about his affair with Candice Montgomery. Allan claims he didn’t say anything because it was over a long time ago. When Steve asks why he ended it, Allan says Candy had fallen in love with him.
When Candy wakes up, she tries to have sex with her husband. They’re interrupted when Deputy Deffibaugh calls to ask Candy a few questions. She agrees to come down to the station tomorrow bright and early. At the police station, Candy tells Steve and Denny about her affair with Allan Gore. She insists it has nothing to do with this and she ended it a long time ago. When Steve asks whether she has feelings for Allan, she says only friendly ones. Denny notices that she has broken several fingernails. Candy says they’re so brittle. Although she tries growing them, she can’t. Candy agrees to let them take pictures of her and her fingerprints.
When Denny notices a spot of blood on her shoe, Candy complains she keeps kicking her storm door and her husband won’t fix it. Steve takes a picture of the cut and notices she has several nasty bruises on her foot too. Candy claims she got them while playing with the kids since she bruises if the wind hits her wrong. Steve asks her if she killed Betty Gore, but she quickly says no. She agrees to take a polygraph test as well. At home, Pat celebrates Father’s Day with the kids. He thanks them and calls himself the luckiest dad in the whole world. Allan reads cards before hearing something nearby. He loads the dishwasher and starts. Allan walks into the laundry room where his wife’s body was found.
Before long, he sits down to watch television and sees a news report about Betty’s death. He learns that a female associated with the family was brought in for questioning. Allan tries to call someone but has to stop when the soap suds spew out of the dishwasher. Once he cleans up the mess, he calls Bob so he can tell them about the affair before they hear about it on the news. Candy asks Pat whether he told the kids she was questioned, but he told them she just wanted to help. He wants to make sure they weren’t scared. Sherry calls Candy to tell her that they found a footprint. Candy goes into the garage where she lights a cigarette.
She cuts up the sandals she was wearing and throws them into the trashcan. On Monday, Candy goes to the Crowder & Mattox Law Offices to tell Don about the polygraph test. He calls for Robert Udashen (Jesse Gallegos). Then, he takes a dollar from Candy to be officially retained as her counsel. Don doesn’t think the polygraph is a good idea since Candy’s nerves are likely shot. Robert enters and learns that they’re trying to turn Candy into the ax murderer.
Don asks Candy where she was on Friday. She was at Bible school. She went to Betty’s to get Christina’s bathing suit before going to Target. Once she got there, she realized that her watch had stopped working so she went back to church. Robert asks whether she went back to church covered in blood. She says no. Don believes they’re looking for a drifter or transient. They believe everyone knows Candy didn’t do it. Robert doesn’t think the sheriff has anything because they’d have a warrant otherwise. She is told not to worry because they’ll call the police. On Tuesday, Sherry and Candy arrive at the Gore house to help prepare for the funeral.
Sherry tries to convince Christina to change into black, but she refuses. She wants to wear the yellow dress that her mother made for her. Christina screams at them before running to her room. Allan tells them that Elaine helped clean up the house and will be back later to watch the baby while they’re at the funeral. When the baby begins crying, Candy tells Sherry she’ll handle the food so she can help Allan with the baby. Candy puts the food in the other refrigerator and images seeing blood on the door. She continues thinking about the blood and evidence until the dogs start barking and Allan enters the door. The funeral begins a few moments later.
Becky (Aven Lotz) comforts Christina when she enters and begins crying. Allan tells Bob (Rick Espaillat) that he is so sorry. Bob says she was so beautiful, smart, and full of life. Although she had her pick, she selected Allan. Outside, Steve takes pictures of license plates and guests. Denny wonders if Candy is sleeping with the other guy too. If you sleep with one of your friend’s husbands, what would stop you from sleeping with all of them. When Allan is home alone, he begins crying. On Wednesday, Pat tells his wife that they’ve found a fingerprint. He claims they’re going to nail this guy and they’ll be able to put this behind them. He suggests having a family night this weekend while Candy’s mind wanders elsewhere.
Candy visits Don a bit later and it looks like she confesses to him. Pat cooks and throws out the trash. He finds something in the trashcan that bothers him so it might be Candy’s sandals. He puts the trash bag in the can and closes the lid anyway. Candy hugs Don before leaving his office. He goes back inside to tell Robert that she did it and they have a self-defense case. That night, Pat goes to the garage and grabs the ax. He goes outside where he begins hitting a stump and counting each hit. He is exhausted before he reaches the number 41. He puts the ax back and returns to bed with Candy.
Candy Review
This episode of Candy felt like it was doing a whole lot of nothing. There were many scenes where the character just stared at the screen or did something pointlessly just to fill time. I am still having difficulty really building a rapport with any of the characters. All of the male characters are starting to fall into the same hole of stupidity. From the cops to the lawyers, the male characters are unbelievably stupid and that is hurting the show’s credibility.
The story probably would’ve been better served as three or four episodes instead of five. Regardless, we’ve made it this far so there is only the big conclusion again. As I said previously, we are heading towards a head-on collision that will either go out with a bang or whimper.
