Why we should all be watching Saturday Night Live

NBC’S Saturday Night Live has been running since 1975. Forty-two years of sketch comedy and it never gets old! Here are some of the top reasons why they keep knocking them out of the park from day one:

They produced some of Americas top comedians we still see today:

Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig are a small handful of many talented comedians who found fame while performing on the jazzed up stage of Saturday Night Live. Every week the cast and writers have 2 days to write their sketch content and the remaining week rehearsing with their new celebrity host ready for Saturday night. Ferrell, part of the cast between 1995-2002, was cast when ratings began to decline in the 90’s, his raw talent for comedy was just what the show needed and found an early rise to success in such a short space of time. Ferrell then went on to star in hilarious comedies such as Anchorman (2004), Step Brothers (2008) and the Christmas favourite Elf (2003). Kristen Wiig, star of Bridesmaids (2011) has created some of SNL’s most iconic characters such as the questionable ‘Dooneese’ the messed up uglier one of 4 sisters from the Finger-lakes. With her babies hands and a forehead like a landing strip she’ll have you laughing out of your seat.

They gave us Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump:

SNL has always been prized on its ability to humour recent weekly events, this season was no different as its 42nd season started during the tense build up toward the 2016 Presidential Election. Starting on the same week as the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, SNL brought in their funniest cold opening with Alec Baldwin doing an uncanny impression of Donald Trump and one of the most talented SNL cast members of all time Kate McKinnon, doing a fantastic comedic portrayal of Hillary Clinton. The hair, the orange face, the voice – he’s got it all! Although many wanted to see McKinnon as Hillary Clinton for the next four years, things may have turned out significantly better. Her Kellyanne Conway impression will not be short of material with the President’s counsellor and former campaign manager making up terrorist attacks and illegally promoting Ivanka Trumps fashion line all in the space of the short time Trump has been President.

Kate McKinnon – SNL’s latest breakout comedian

Like many cast members Kate McKinnon performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade before her SNL audition and was also a vital cast member of the Big Gay Sketch show in the mid 2000’s. In 2016 she was the break out star of the new Ghostbusters (2016) reboot were she played nuclear physicist, Jillian Holtzmann. McKinnon is definitely the one to watch as she co-writes many of the weekly sketches and creates hilariously wacky characters such as cat lady Barbara Dedrew from ‘Whiskers are We’ and Miss Rafferty from ‘a close encounter’; she is possibly the most versatile cast member that SNL has ever seen. Social media has been calling on McKinnon to play all recent American political figures because she is so darn good at it! Her Jeff Sessions, Kellyanne Conway, Hillary Clinton and Anne Romney impressions are the best we have seen yet. McKinnon is staring in the 2017 comedy Rough Night, co-starring Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell and Zoe Kravitz, as a band of funny ladies making a bachelorette weekend something to remember.

New celebrity host and musical guests each week!:

To keep each week fresh and exciting the show is hosted by well known actors and musicians. This present season has seen top actors such as Margo Robbie, Tom Hanks and Emily Blunt, followed by musical performances from Ed Sheeran, Lorde, and Bruno Mars to name a few. Each host brings something new and hilarious to the show and to top it all off IT’S LIVE! One of the best moments of the show is when they occasionally break character and burst into fits of laughter on stage, this breaks the show down to reveal what sketch comedy is all about – laughter!
