Pokémon Sun and Moon Nintendo’s biggest UK launch

Pokémon Sun and Moon are Nintendo’s biggest selling launch in the UK.

The two latest releases to the Nintendo 3DS Pokémon franchise have sold twice the number of units as their predecessors, Pokémon Alpha and Sapphire in 2014.

To give a little insight, Pokémon Sun and Moon have sold more units than Wii Fit in 2008, when the Nintendo Wii was at the height of its popularity.

Pokémon Sun and Moon have placed third and forth in the UK Games Chart, respectively, with Fifa 17 and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, taking first and second place, aided in part by Black Friday discounts. However, if the sales of Pokemon Sun and Moon were combined, they would comfortably clinch the top spot.

The Pokémon franchise has been on a high in 2016, with this summer seeing the launch of Pokémon GO! which brought Pokémon back to millions of people who had not been engaged with Pokémon for a long time.

It appears that Nintendo are largely interested in keeping Pokémon as a key franchise in their line-up of console games, with Eurogamer.com sources indicating that Pokémon Sun and Moon will be ported over to the upcoming Nintendo Switch.
