Passing media from one hand to the next without paying the owner of the copywrite is wrong. But if you want to make a backup for your personal library, you are smart. Even if most of your movies are downloaded directly onto a computer hard drive, having a hard copy is a smart course of action. If you want to make a backup to your movie collection, you will need to know who makes the best DVD rippers and who to avoid.Reviews gave the number one nod to DVD Cloner 7. It is the newest in the Cloner series and it has the very best features. The power packed software is user friendly and has all of the latest decryption codes. It includes multi-format compression and DVD restoration for those movies that have been handled roughly. If you want to rip Blu-ray or HD, you will need to download a few bonus features, but doing so is made easy to understand by the Cloner designers.
Just a little less praise-worthy, according to reviewers, is the 1 click DVD Copy 5. When set up, this software is said to be as easy to use, and efficient as the Cloner software. However, reviews suggest that it is somewhat of a hassle to find and download the third-party decrypter needed to rip your media.
If that seems like a difficult task you might want to choose another DVD ripper. The DVD Fab Platinum 5 is equipped with all the features. It has a sharp learning curve and users say the end product is slightly inferior to other software's, but it has everything you will need to get right to ripping DVD's. In the end, once you are familiar with the enormous feature set you are ready to burn any DVD, Blu-ray or otherwise.
Lastly, DVD 95 Copy Pro 3.8 to round out the competition. There are tons of other software's out there, but these four had the best reviews from the most sources. Copy Pro 3.8 is lauded for the numerous compression options. It takes a savvy user to wield the power of the compression features and that can make it tricky for first time users. Getting used to the compression features will unlock a truly good program and getting there is tough. The one downside to the software is that it lacks a good ripping component. Once you decide what you want to spend, go out and find one of these great DVD rippers.

7 Tools for Ripping Your DVDs

Why shouldn't you watch the movies you paid for on the device of your choice? With these DVD rippers and converters, you can.

By Kyle Monson

The RealDVD announcement this week is big news, in that the software's DRM might actually convince Hollywood to let ordinary people back up their DVDs to their hard drives. Unfortunately, the resulting movie files are locked up tighter than Hannibal Lecter; you can play them on up to five licensed PCs, but you can't watch them on your iPod or other device. As such, RealDVD doesn't really give users what they want: a way to put their purchased movies on their PCs and move them to iPods, iPhones, PSPs, and network-attached devices. (PC Mag Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff griped about this last year.)
7diggsdigg
Essentially, we want the same freedom with DVDs that we have with CDs, and there are lots of DVD-ripping and file-converting tools online that give users that freedom. Many of the best ones are free or accept donations, and those are the ones we'll focus on here.

There are two categories of tools you'll need. The first are DVD rippers, which extract the video and audio files from DVDs and put them on your hard drive. Once there, you can use a DVD converter app to transcode the files to a format that's playable on your iPod, PSP, TiVo, Apple TV, or whatever other device you might be using.
We should note that PC Magazine does not condone any form of piracy: We aren't highlighting these DVD-ripping tools so that you can rip every Netflix movie that comes in the mail. But they're handy for backing up your purchased DVD collection and freeing up your movies so that you can watch them on the device of your choosing.

DVD Decrypter
This legendary DVD ripper was taken down in 2005, but you can still find downloadable copies of it floating around the Web. It's completely free, stable, and feature rich. DVD Decrypter isn't a one-stop, but pair it with the free Videora iPod Converter and you can easily get your movie into an iTunes-friendly format. From there, you can load it onto your iPod or iPhone. Note that because DVD Decrypter hasn't been supported in three years, it may not always work with the DRM on your DVDs, but it did work on our test DVDs.

DVDFab HD Decrypter 5
www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
The free version of this software works well for DVD-to-DVD copying or for backing up discs to your hard drive. But if you want more features than that, there are tons to be had with the paid versions. For $49.99, the Platinum version does absolutely everything you might need to do: cropping, volume control, and many more customization options. DVDFab Mobile Option costs just $19.99, and it optimizes your movies for iPods, PSPs, Zunes, PDAs, and more.

DVDShrink
www.dvdshrink.org
Once you've ripped a purchased DVD to your PC with one of the tools on this list, you might notice that the files are too big to burn back to a blank DVD. Use the free DVDShrink tool to compress the files so they'll fit on a normal optical disc. Then use your app of choice to burn the disc.

HandBrake
www.handbrake.fr
This cross-platform (once more for emphasis: a cross-platform) DVD ripper is open-source, free, and highly customizable. It optimizes DVDs and video files for just about every portable device you'd want to watch a movie on, plus devices like the Apple TV.

MacTheRipper
www.mactheripper.org
The popular MacTheRipper app excels at easy DVD ripping/extracting, getting files off your DVDs and onto your hard drive. Pair it with an app like HandBrake and you can then convert and optimize the files for playback on your device of choice.

Videora Video Converter
www.videora.com
Videora has developed a number of free video-conversion tools that are each specifically tailored to a device (Videora iPod Converter, Videora Xbox 360 Converter, Videora TiVo Converter, and others). They're all free (though there are ads that run in the app), and they're ridiculously easy to use—even video newbies will have an easy time using this software. You can convert files on your PC (including ripped files from DVDs) or convert videos from the Web.

ImgBurn
www.imgburn.com
There are countless apps to write images to discs, but ImgBurn stands out from the crowd. It has robust format support, ease of use, and a winning price (free!). Beyond burning, the app also makes images from discs, which is another good way to back up your optical media.

Bonus: AfterDawn.com
www.afterdawn.com
AfterDawn.com is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in keeping up on the latest multimedia hardware and software. If you're looking for new tools to try out, or if you want tips for using your existing multimedia tools, AfterDawn.com can help you out with its forums, downloads, and playback guides.

DVD Ripper Review

By Jennifer Hicks

If your DVD movie collection has grown as quickly as your personal device collection, consider using DVD ripping software to take your movies with you in whatever format you choose. No matter what you use, whether it's an iPad, BlackBerry or another mobile device, ripping software allows you to convert your movies to a format that is compatible with that device, plus many extra features. In this DVD ripper review, we’ll focus on the range of capabilities available in DVD copy software as well as what you can do with the features of this type of software and how much it will cost.
Let’s start with products. More than a half-dozen software companies sell basic DVD ripping software that will transfer your DVD movies to your hard drive, allegedly with no quality loss, and you can back up those files before converting your movies to the format of your choice. Depending on the software manufacturer, these formats might include AVI, ASF, WMV, MP4, MPEG, RM, MOV, XviD, DivX, VOB, FLV and others. Software may vary in terms of which formats are included, so check the details before ordering any to be sure that it will support your devices.
In addition to converting DVD movies to the format of your choice, ripping software offers other functions. Most products will allow you to rip from DVD to HD and other video formats, including HD QuickTime.

Other features of DVD ripping software include the ability to extract audio from DVD movies and convert that audio into the format of your choice. You can also clip segments of a DVD and merge those clips into one continuous clip, crop out scenes you want to remove and add things such as soundtracks and subtitles.
With some software, you can achieve video effects with cropping tools and artistic additions such as changing brightness or contrast. Note that depending on the manufacturer, some of these capabilities only come with the more expensive versions of the software.
Another nice feature is the ability to split a DVD chapter into several sections so you can more easily find the sections you want on your portable device. For those who want to customize clips and do so without infringing on copyright laws, DVD ripping software provides a watermark feature that lets you add the watermark after you’ve personalized a portion of video with your own picture or text.
You can download most DVD ripping software for immediate use or purchase it as boxed software. Generally speaking, DVD ripping software is designed for Windows 7, XP and 2000 operating systems, though Mac versions are also available. You’ll need 100MB or more of free hard disk space to download the software, and at least 256MB of RAM for some products, though more RAM is usually recommended.
For basic DVD ripping software, you’ll pay around $35 to $40. Compare software packages closely because some include various features and video effects while other only offer these additions with more expensive software packages that can cost around $50 to $60.
