Late show guy Jimmy Kimmel, 50, is used to making his viewers laugh but lately, he’s been bringing us to tears. After a week off for his seven months old son’s second heart surgery, the comedian returned to his late-night show earlier this week. His first monologue back was far from a comedy, instead using his platform to petition with Congress to rehabilitate and better children’s health coverage.
The comedian had a little helper with him to deliver his message, his son Billy.
While holding son Billy, 7 months, in his arms, Kimmel at several points during his talk fought back tears while explaining the dire urgency to keep CHIP funded.
He went on to make clear to his viewers what exactly the program is, “About one and eight children are covered only by CHIP. It covers around 9 million American kids whose parents make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but don’t have access to affordable coverage through their jobs, which means it almost certainly covers children you know.”

His wholehearted and Passionate Rant went on to denounce both Democrats and Republicans as using CHIP as a “bargaining chip.” He explained further, “It’s on the back burner while they work out their new tax plans. Which means parents of children with cancer and diabetes and heart problems are about to get letters saying their coverage could be cut off next month. Merry Christmas, right?”
Jimmy and his wife Molly, 39, welcomed their son William back in April. Shortly after Molly gave birth they found out their son had a congenital heart disease. Billy had a hole in both sides of his heart. He immediately underwent his first heart surgery. Doctors told the couple he would need a second surgery at 3-6 months old.
At the end of his monologue, he asked on behalf of his family and especially Billy to please make two phone calls, to the House and Senate to reinstate the CHIP program.
