Exorcism December: The possessed – comic book review

Exorcism December: The Possessed – Comic Book Review

Due to my love of the best exorcist out there John Constantine, I assumed that finding comic books with exorcists would be quite common. Unfortunately I had a hard time finding some. This seemed to be one of the rare ones.

A short six-issue Comic book series, The Possessed tells the story of a group of exorcists. They were possessed as children and for one reason or the other now try to rid the world of the very evil that once terrorized them. Some of them rely on their faith to get them through while others on their lack of faith.
It was co-written by Geoff Johns and Kris Grimminger, with artwork provided by Liam Sharp.

We meet the rowdy group as they exorcise a young girl (who looks very much like the girl from the exorcist movie) as their leader, Christian (spoiler alert, the man with the same name as me is my favorite character of the series) notices a symbol and begins to investigate it.

The story is not anything too special or unique but it does not have to be. There is enough diversity in the characters that keeps you interested. The artwork was also fantastic, I absolutely loved it. It wasn’t the best, there were a few pages that felt like they lacked effort but overall it was a perfect style for a comic like this. The character designs were also fantastic.

Yet the comic’s strong side was also it’s weakness. It gives you a great look into the world of exorcists. The hard things you go through, the sacrifices you make, the effect it has on your physical and mental health and the people you lose along the way. But that’s all it does, it just tells you that this exists. It would have been nice to expand upon it because there was a lot to work with. Maybe somehow in the future it could be picked up as a TV show where the potential could be expanded upon but then again after looking at Locke and Key (which I gave up on after three episodes) maybe would be a bad idea.

It’s a good comic but it could have been great. Still, it’s worth a one time read. You can find it on https://www.dccomics.com/graphic-novels/the-possessed among other places.

Final verdict: a generous 7/10
