For the upcoming season 3 of The Crown Netflix have confirmed that British actor Tobias Menzies will take over the role previously portrayed by Matt Smith.  You might notice Tobias Menzies for his previous roles in some of TV’s highest rated shows including: Game of Thrones, Outlander & The Night Manager.

He isn’t the only casting change as he joins Olivia Colman who replaces Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II

Matt Smith told DigitalSpy that he has no problems with being replaced, he said: “I think it’s really interesting to see how people are going to reinterpret it, and I think it keeps it fresh,”

The actor also went on to say that he believes remaining in the same role would become boring after so long. “And I think it’s difficult to sustain an actor’s interest over six [seasons],”

Series creator Peter Morgan spoke about re-casting the characters as they get older, he said: “You can’t ask someone to act middle-aged. Someone has to bring their own fatigue to it. The feelings we all have as 50-year-olds are different than the feelings we all have as 30-year-olds.“
