For the last 17 editions, the Miss Earth pageant has not only highlighted environmental protection and conversion through various preliminary activities and sub-contests but has also introduced several innovations to the traditional concepts of beauty pageants.
In a short span of time, Miss Earth has solidified its brand as an environmental event channeling the platform of a beauty pageant to spread awareness in protecting the environment. Before reaching its second decade, Miss Earth has partnered with numerous organizations, both government and private, in raising its worthwhile cause.
Now on its 18 edition, Miss Earth is invited by the Philippine government to showcase the opening of the Boracay Island, after its six months of rehabilitation, as part of the eco-tourism initiatives of the Tourism and Environment departments.
Despite all the naysayers have accused Miss Earth, for its alleged fixing of results or its bias to Philippine delegates, the pageant has been a recognized and trusted brand, headed by a reputable name in the business sector. Fans might have forgotten that results are tabulated and verified, unlike many international pageants, by a reputable auditing firm in the Philippines whose name is synonymous with credibility and transparency.
There may be a lot of shortcomings in terms of marketing the pageant to make it more appealing to hardcore pageant fans, the pageant cannot be faulted for all its efforts to make the brand financially strong all through these years. Mounting a big event, with nearly 90 international delegates annually, will not be cheap. It carries certain financial stability, which Miss Earth has attained by slowly etching its mark in the beauty pageant industry.
Miss Earth has never made it its goal to be the glossy pageant that its competitors aspire. It does not promise fame nor a lucrative international modeling career for its winners. Rather, Miss Earth promises a platform for women who truly care for the environment to be agents of change.
As such, Miss Earth has been crowning women who are well spoken and with substance. Miss Earth 2017 may not be the prettiest queen that may suit the universal taste and acceptance of noisy critics, but she can outsmart and outwit any pretty candidate that certain countries are fond of but have constantly fumbled in the Interview round, hence losing the race.
Now on its 18th year, Miss Earth has now cemented a name in the world of beauty pageants in the league of Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International. Stability is something that any organization aspires, which can only truly be achieved by experience and a certain amount of period. And for Miss Earth, it is the magic number of 18.
Truly, Miss Earth has now come of age. Like a woman, Miss Earth has now blossomed into maturity and is eager to jump into the world with new enthusiasm and optimism for the coming years.
