As audiences, we always seem to be infatuated by our heroes, but often it is the villains who deliver remarkable performances through their wicked and cruel acts. Hindi films are incomplete without these devils. The bad guys are so bad that they turn out to be actually very good. Looking at some of the most iconic villainous acts produced in Bollywood:

Gajendra from the movie Ram Aur Shyam (1967)

Played by Pran, this Character of an oppressive brother-in-law really made the audience angry.

Prem from the movie Bobby (1973)

Prem Chopra portrayed this memorable character and he was really the father of all villains during that period. Contrary to his name, Prem was always known for hitting on girls, kidnapping heroines and forcing himself on women. Iconic Dialogue: “Prem Naam Hai Mera, Prem Chopra”.

Gabbar from the movie Sholay (1975)

Played by the late Amjad Khan, this iconic character can never be replicated. Even Big B tried to imitate the act in Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag but did not generate the same amount of intensity. The first choice for the role of Gabbar was Danny Denzongpa, who did not have dates to shoot for the film. Amjad Khan thus landed a role and the rest remains history. Sholay would have been incomplete with this iconic performance that still runs a chill down our spine. Memorable dialogues such as “Yeh Haath Humko De De Thakur”, “Jo Darr Gaya Samjho Marr Gaya”, and “Holi Kab Hai, Kab Hai Holi” still reverberate in our ears.

Lion from the movie Kalicharan (1976)

Ajit played this suave, classy villain with an accent in Subhash Ghai’s directorial debut “Kalicharan”. Ajit’s pronunciation of the word “lion” became evergreen. Iconic dialogue: “Saara Shahar Mujhe Lion Ke Naam Se Jaanta Hai”.

Robert from the movie Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

Played by Jeevan, a common bad guy in the period of 1960s and1970s, the character of “Robert” was over-the-top and most remembered for the dialogue delivery. Jeevan seemed to excel at all types of negative characters – be it the urbane baddie or the evil village dweller.

Sir Juda from the movie Karz (1980)

Premnath plays a bizarre, greedy villain, who communicates by tapping out codes that only his henchman Mac Mohan can understand. One of the most unique villains of Bollywood, Premnath was commendable in his role. Iconic Dialogue: “Sir Juda Kehtey Hain”

Shakaal from the movie Shaan (1980)

Kulbhushan Kharbanda played Shakaal, a character inspired from West. The villain was a personification of coolness. Possessing an island with sharks, crocodiles and fancy gadgets, Shakaal was a wicked but sophisticated baddie. Though Shaan did not create the same magic as Sholay at the box office, the character of Shakaal remains installed in our memory and will remain so for years to come. Dialogue like “Yeh Zehreeli Gas Dheere Dheere Mehfil Ko Aur Rangeen Banati Rahegi” took the performance of Kulbhushan Kharbanda to a different level.

Dr. Dang from the movie Karma (1986)

One of Anupam Kher’s finest performances, where he played the role of an educated man using science to spread terror. Kher, as Dr. Dang, is wicked as hell. Iconic Dialogue: “Iss Thappad Ki Goong Suni Tumne? Ab Is Goonj Ki Goong.”

Mogambo from the movie Mr. India (1987)

One of the main reasons Mr. India still remains one of the finest sci-fi movies to have been made in Bollywood is because of Mogambo, played by Amrish Puri. Donning a strange costume with props like stick and surrounded by loyalists around a throne, Mogambo remains Amrish Puri’s most scary fearsome performance. He became the very definition of evil. The iconic dialogue: “Mogambo Khush Hua” still scares many people.

Kancha Cheena from the movie Agneepath (1970)

Gelled hair and aviators, Danny Denzongpa completely nailed this character. Essaying the role of a self-proclaimed underworld don who conquers the village of Mandwa, Danny was the archetypal antagonist and quite a brutal one.

Bulla from the movie Gunda (1998)

Easily the cheapest villain Bollywood has till date. A simple glance at the villain and one realises he is plain dirty. In the film “Gunda”, Mukesh Rishi plays a don, a killer and rapist. Iconic Dialogue: “Oh! Toh Ye Hai Hasina Ka Paseena, Mera Naam Hai Bulla, Rakhta Hoon Main Khulla.”

Gokul Pandit from the movie Dushman (1998)

One of the scariest characters of all time, Ashutosh Rana made audiences hate him for a long, long time. He was so convincing as a rapist that he is still remembered for his devilish act in the film “Dushman”, which also won him several awards that year.

Makdee from the movie Makdee (2003)

Known for her professionalism Shabana Azmi did intense research on witches and even downloaded some images of witches from the internet. She played the spooky witch in this comic horror film directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. The outfit, make-up and hair added further negativity to her character, and every child who watched this film can confirm.

Baa from the movie Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

With character of Baa, Supriya Pathak offered one of the most deadly female villains of Bollywood. She plays a dominant mother who even goes to the extent of chopping her daughter’s finger.

Diana from the movie Ek Thi Daayan (2013)

Konkona Sen Sharma is a fabulous actor – there wasn’t an iota of doubt, but she proved her prowess when she played an unusual witch, dressed in a khadi saree with kolh filled eyes. Konkona was successful in keeping the audience on the edges.
