The incredible Nose Pin or the Nose Ring in the Hindi Film Universe and why is Aamir Khan wearing one ?!

We have heard of a trendy Nose pin or a Nose Ring as they call it in our Indian tradition but what is it doing in the Hindi Cinema circle and we hear it is a marker for honour .

Apparently the shiny little nose pin on Aamir Khan‘s nose is a part of his new look for the year 2018 for his upcoming film Thugs of Hindostan which has got his fans excited and very soon the little nose pin that is gaining attention might be a part of the dress code for the men !!  As fans of Bollywood like to imitate the stars and idolise on being like them in every way.

Since nose rings is a tradition, a part of a jewellery worn by women in India that too in some class of the society only one wonders what made Aamir Khan wear one and his new look is definitely been speculated every time he makes a public appearance with the jewellery for his promos for his film .

Off course in Hindi films jewellery is diversified and associated with the effect it has on the storyline and many filmmakers have been used a part of the jewellery for many films over the decade in Bollywood.   Characters are often seen using the sentences like ‘ Choodi Pehen Le ( wear bangles) which actually means ‘ You are unable to prove your masculinity’ !.

Recently Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor created a buzz when they donned the large nose rings while walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival which added the desi flavour to their attire.

Even as the fans of the Bollywood cinema gets enthralled by the idea of men wearing a jewellery and challenge the traditional norm that only women wear jewellery. Hindi cinema has been featuring or stating examples of striking jewellery in many of the films over decades now.

Veteran Actor Dilip Kumar asking the world to stop looking at him as he hums on the song ‘ Mere Pairon Mein Ghungroo from the film Sunghursh a film released in 1968  in which he is seen wearing a silver anklet and ear studs.

Hindi Cinema over the years have had songs revolving around the piece of the jewellery like Jhumkas and  1966 the very popular song Jhumka Gira Re from Mera Saya got  famous.

In 1971 in the film HongKong by Johar Mehmood the woman is filled with diamonds as she declares that only her nose ring will be the source of her happiness when it moves..  The song that depicts her feelings is Nathianiya Hale Toh…. !

Rakhi Sawant in Horn Ok Pleassss released in 2009 cautions her lover to remove her nose ring carefully in the song Nathani Utaro Sambhal ke Piya…..

Women who sing songs about nose rings are often leaving a doubt in our minds about their sexuality for a man or the mention of this ornament is just to titillate or entice their love interest.

Another popular number on a jewellery in a song which got famous from Do Raaste released in 1969 in which the lyrics Bindiya Chamkegi  is sung by Mumtaz to amuse her lover Rajesh Khanna.  The song created ripples and got so popular but Mumu didn’t really care much of the nose pin or her sexuality,  the music and the lyrics was loved by the fans.

Many other films like Tulsi Vivah in 1971 had the woman wearing an expensive nose ring which she had lost at an young age but in one scene she is singing the lines,… Meri Sawwa Lakh Ki Nathnni …

Nose Ring in particular flaunted is a sign of sexuality among women in films like Madhosh of 1974 a woman dancing imagines her nose ring will bring her a lot of joy as she croons on the lines ‘ Nathani Meri Dole Re…. Koi thaame toh bada maza aaye’ .

Bollywood has had some beautiful melodious songs based on the jewellery like Manna Dey‘s soft and emotional song Nathani Se Toota Moti Rey which was a non-filmy song and

The song and dance by the diva Hema Malini on  Eh Thaiyya Motiya lyrics from Laaga Chunari Mein Daag of 2007 depicts a woman being nostalgic on the loss of a pearl from her nose ring after she meets her man.

Besides the nosepin many other ornaments have been significant and a part of the lyrics like Mere Pairon Mein Ghungroo Bundha Do from Patiala House in 2011 released film

In the film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela in 2013, we see men wearing jewellery like the necklaces and earrings that are stunning to strike an envy in a women’s heart.

In Bajirao Mastani in 2015 and one of the most recent films of Bollywood , Mastani and Kashibai’s position in Bajirao’s life was easily differentiated by the nose pins they wore. Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra)who was his official wife wore a traditional Maharashtrian nose ring called the Nath while Mastani (Deepika Padukone) his lover wore a large nose ring. And in a dialogue Kashibai is said to have said her nose ring testifies her status in the house that she has the nose ring but not her husband’s love.

In many films a loss of a nose ring or a nose ring removed by the partner in a love scene determines the loss of virginity or the woman’s chastity and their nose rings are never a simple ornament and is a mix of expensive and a splendid one.

Nose rings are originally and traditionally worn by the Hindu brides and this features in almost all the films where in we have a bridal or a marriage scene. and the Nose pin or the nose ring has been the surprisingly well expressed ornament. A few of the films that adopted a jewellery in their songs that got popular.
