Nvidia will begin supporting FreeSync monitors

In a move that surprised pretty much all PC gaming enthusiasts, Nvidia announced at CES 2019 that they will begin Supporting Freesync Monitors. The support will arrive with a graphics driver that is set to release on January 15th.

In their press conference at CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced this new support. Nvidia has said that they are testing every async Monitor on the market, and if they can get results from the test, the monitor will be officially supported. Nvidia has tested over 400 monitors already, and said they will officially support 12 out of the 400 tested.

This is big news for the PC gaming market. A few years back two prominent async technologies emerged: FreeSync and G-Sync. Async technology allows for smooth gaming on PC by changing the refresh rate of the monitor to match the frames-per-second being output by the video game you are playing. FreeSync is supported all through software, where G-Sync had proprietary hardware installed in monitors. This led to what is known as the “G-Sync tax,” where monitors that supported G-Sync were hundreds of dollars more than FreeSync counterparts.

As a user with a FreeSync monitor and an Nvidia GPU, I’m excited to check out this technology in a little over a week!
