Quick Tips: Traveling On Low-Cost Airlines

The no-superfluity airline style, commenced by Southwest in the 1980s, is no longer a U.S. phenomenon. Low Cost Air Company are popping up all over the world. They are taking over domestic and international routes through Europe and Asia and limited routes in South America, Africa, the Middle East and some manage to fly even intercontinentally with profitable results.

Yet there is a “turn over” side to low-priced tickets. People who are planning their trip can spend a considerable amount of time searching the web for the best deal starting from the flight. Not all countries have a low-cost airline companies and not all airports are serviced by this kind of airlines.
Many low-fare companies don’t accept reservations made through on-line agencies such as Expedia and Orbitz. The marketing offers are more often than not limited and run out on a daily if not hourly basis. And when you lastly find a flight, it is problematical to compare all the offering available.

On today's Internet market you have two options:
  • A DIY (do-it-yourself) search
  • Or go for air travel search websites where you get all the offers available in few seconds and the hard work is done by them
Option #1: DIY (Do-It-Yourself)

Research
Verify which companies service the route you wish to fly.
If you are traveling overseas or inside a foreign country or continent, detect local on-line agencies that offer discount airfares.
Low cost airline companies frequently use minor airports. Verify distance and ground transportation before you make a reservation.

Getting the best deal
Start your search for the best price long in advance
Subscribe to the airline newsletter so that you will receive emails with up-to-date offers
Use the consolidator only as a tool. If you book directly with the airline you may be able to reduce the service rate without affecting the fare

Comparing fares
Make sure you are checking a round trip fare because low cost tickets are frequently priced on a one-way basis
Taxes, handling fees and other additional charges are not usually included in the original price. You need to get to the final page to actually compare the costs

Before you depart
On some low-cost airline companies food and drinks are no longer included in the price of the ticket therefore it is advisable to pack a lunch or a snack and perhaps a drinks
Arrive at the airport earlier than usual if you want to sit next to your companion or/and the kids. Usually seating is most likely to be open and boarding is often based on the order in which the passengers check-in.
Option #2: Air Travel Search Websites

Which air travel search website is the best? Well there isn’t a “best” air travel search website.
I would say it depends: on what? Well, it depends on your travel needs and budget.

The solution would be finding the website that matches perfectly your search criteria. Every website has a different platform that produces different solutions and offers.
I tested different sites with the same exact search domestic and international, and also if the company offers a Premium Economy class besides the regular basic Economy..

Following there are the five websites that I personally verified:

CheapAir.com – Easy form filling, fast results, very sleek website design. Your earlier searches are stored so you can simply return to them; the filtering tools are very helpful when it comes to finding flights that are suitable to your schedule and budget. Cheapair offers Premium Economy for a more comfy flight besides the regular basic Economy.

Kiwi.com – Neat website design makes easy the search for your reservation. Kiwi.com can combine low-cost airline companies with big carriers, for instance Norwegian+Easy Jet.  It would be very difficult for you to make this combination using the airlines websites search. Kiwi doesn’t offer the option of choosing the class on the airplane cabin.

LookupFare.com – Nice website with easy search portal. The search results look a little confusing in the design itself however the price and flights are clearly displayed.  Fast search results with comparison of the prices. Doesn’t offer Premium Economy (extra legroom) option.

Skyscanner.com -   Great design website with easy search display. Search result is very fast downloading the page almost immediately. Neat and clear display of options. Skyscanner offers Premium Economy option on top of the regular Economy for a more comfortable long haul flight.

Jetradar.com – Clear and neat web search with very fast comparison results. The page with the flights options available is bold and clear with big text size showing the price, Airline Company and schedule.  Jetradar doesn’t offer Premium Economy option.
Be aware that these are comparison only websites. They don’t actually sell tickets however they will take you directly straight to the actual website just by clicking the deal you like .
These sites are a fantastic opportunity for those looking to purchase flight tickets online finding the best options available from hundreds of agencies, and helping the users save  lot of time and efforts doing searches over and over on their own. Remember to subscribe to the newsletter so you will be able to receive all the last minute deals besides prices updates and trends on your specific search.

Till the next one…have a fun and inexpensive flight!
