I love the anticipation before a much awaited trip. The excitement and adrenaline that build up as you countdown the last few days until your island getaway. It’s all part of the fun. But with that being said, traveling in and out of airports can be stressful and sometimes, even chaotic. Especially huge airports. Like LAX. With 9 separate terminals, the world’s sixth busiest Airport is a lot to handle. But it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re about to start a well-deserved vacation, or just heading off on another routine business trip – these LAX airport hacks will make your travels much more fun, smooth and an overall, better experience!

For saving time:

  • Always choose the line on the left. The majority of the population is right handed, and studies have shown that people are generally inclined to gravitate toward cues on the right. Take Beyoncé’s advice on this one; to the left, to the left…
  • If you’re flying United, bypass extremely long security lines by checking in at Terminal 6. This much less hectic terminal connects to United’s Terminal 7!
  • This one’s pretty obvious- yet nonetheless, people always seem to forget it. …Don’t be one of those people. Check-in online!
  • Apply for TSA Pre✓®  ($85 for a 5 year membership). In July 2016, 97% of TSA Pre® passengers waited less than 5 minutes. Not bad at all.
  • Check real-time airport conditions (delays, long security lines, etc.) with this convenient website.

For saving money:

  • Paying $4 for a tiny bottle of water at the airport is enough to make anyone cringe. Pack an empty bottle in your carry-on and after checking in, head to one of the free drinking fountains. Refill your water bottle as many times as your thirsty, little heart desires.
  • Have some time to kill before your flight? Head to the Virgin America Loft. Any passengers departing Terminal 3 can purchase a $30 day pass- this includes free wifi, complimentary food and snacks, and the best part… unlimited cocktails! Sit back and relax with a Mile-High Margarita. It’s the perfect pre-flight pre-game.
  • If you’re heading to East LA from the airport, take the FlyAway shuttle to Union Station (only 45 minutes) for $8. From there, catch a cab to your final destination. For departing passengers- score free parking in the area, then catch the shuttle straight to LAX.

For parking:

  • For cheap parking, use Lot C. You can leave your vehicle here for up to 30 consecutive days per visit. There’s a free shuttle that runs between Lot C and the Central Terminal Area, stopping at each Terminal curbside along the way. The lot is especially convenient if you’re flying Southwest Airlines (which is only a two minute walk away).

For layovers:

  • Meet GateGuru, you’re new BFF to travel with. From restaurants and amenities to maps and weather-  this app can tell you anything you need to know about every airport!
  • You know those awesome, international flights that serve you unlimited wine? If you have a connecting flight with a bit of cushion time, ask for an extra (unopened) serving of wine. Slide it in your bag and voila, something to sip on during your layover. Cheers.
  • Store your bags at the LAX Storage center for only $8 a day.

For meeting arriving passengers:

  • If you’re picking someone up from the airport during peak hours, avoid the arrivals level. Instead, pick up at the departures level (just above).

Because, well… why not?:

  • Board last and test your luck on landing a free upgrade. If there are upper class seats available, attendants often bump up economy passengers at this time. Orrr… if you’re literally one of the last people to step onto a boarded plane, and you see a free seat in business, chances are nobody is going to fill that seat anytime soon. May as well be you!
  • People flock to airport charging stations. Don’t risk your beloved phone battery dying on you. Always travel with a portable charger, or even better- make some instant friends when you pull out your multi-plug power adaptor.
  • Before getting on a flight, soak up some of that beautiful LA sunshine. If you the time, grab a baggage cart and walk between terminals.
