The exhibition ‘The Mellow,’ at the Royal Textile Academy gallery in Thimphu

A local fashion designer’s eco-friendly apparel are on exhibition for the next three months at the Royal Textile Academy beginning today.

Her Royal Highness Princess Euphelma Choden Wangchuck accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Ugyen Jigme Wangchuck graced the opening of the exhibition ‘The Mellow,’ at the RTA gallery in Thimphu, yesterday.

“The Mellow’ according to the designer, Chandrika Pakrim, is a collection inspired by expression of stillness and calmness of water.

The collection includes experimenting with the natural dyes and combination of Bhutanese textile with wooden beads.

“The mixture of purple cabbage with different dyes brings the stillness and links the figure design as simple and calm,” Chandrika said. “It gives a mature, sophisticated and classy look.”

She launched her brand with a vision of becoming fully eco-brand. As the modern fashion industry is the second most polluting commercial industry in the world, she wanted to offer an eco-friendly alternative to fashion enthusiasts.

She started designing and tailoring from home and then came up with the business to fill a void in the Bhutanese fashion context.

She wishes to make her clothing line simple, affordable yet elegant.

An official with the RTA, said that by providing such platforms and publicity opportunities, the RTA intends to inspire, encourage and promote young and upcoming talents to express their creativity and expertise.

A fashion show was also staged at the opening of the exhibition.

Chandrika studied Computer Applications and worked with the Bank of Bhutan prior to becoming a full-time designer.

CDK is a Bhutanese contemporary casual apparel and accessories brand, launched in the autumn of 2016. The name CDK is chosen as a brand name from the name of the promoter, Chandrika.

The RTA in collaboration with CDK Designs organised the exhibition and the sale.
