Onam Festival and Celebrations
Onam festival is the most important festival of Kerala and is celebrated in almost every colleges in South India. Onam celebration in PSG college, Coimbatore happened to be one week before Onam last year. Onam festival is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm by the people of Kerala. This happiness is spread across other students of different states by Keralites within the same colleges. Onam is celebrated in the month of Chingam(August-September) to welcome King Mahabali. The story is that God has granted King Mahabali a boon that after his death he could annually visit his loved one’s.
Onam festival is celebrated with different games like Pookalam, Vadamvali, Sadhya, dance etc.. On this day, men will wear dhothies and ladies will wear sarees as a tribute to Kerala’s ethnic wear. So colleges celebrating this festival will witness their students beauty to the core. Every company and government organisations in Kerala will celebrate this festival with the dress code and will also put Pookalam in their office.
PSG Onam Celebrations
Everyone was eagerly waiting for this wonderful day of college life. College was busy with many programs which should be ready for this particular day. So most of the students were busy with the practices. The day started with “chenda melam” which is a cylindrical instrument played with sticks. Students were dancing according to the sound of Chenda melam and everyone were in a happy mood.
We were full after having the Onam sadhya with 10 to 15 dishes and payasam after the meals. The beautiful day of Onam celebration is not complete without Onam Sadhya.
