Since my sister and I visited the Durrell Wildlife Park on the summer of 2015, I read through all the newsletters they send out quite thoroughly. Last summer I noticed that they announced a photo competition and people can people can submit shots to several different categories. Because during our visit I managed to take lots of pictures, I sat down quickly, selected my favourite ones, sent them to the specified email address and then I forgot about this whole thing.

Amióta 2015 nyarán nővéremmel Jerseyre látogattunk, rendszeresen olvasom a Durrell Állatkert által kiküldött hírleveleket. Tavaly nyár végefele arra lettem figyelmes, hogy Durrellék fotóversenyt hirdetnek és több különböző kategóriában is nevezni lehet. Mivel a látogatásunkkor rendeteg képet készítettem, le is ültem gyorsan, kiválogattam a kedvenceimet, elküldtem a kijelölt email címre, majd jól el is felejtettem az egészet.

A few weeks later I received an unexpected email entitled “Durrell Photographer of the Year: Congatulations!”. My heart was beating really fast while I was reading the message. For a while I couldn’t even believe that my honey bee photo won the Summer at Durrell category.

Hetekkel később egyszercsak egészen váratlanul befutott egy email, aminek az volt a címe, hogy “Durrell Photographer of the Year: Congatulations!”. Nagyot dobbant a szívem, majd gyorsan elolvastam a levél tartalmát. El sem akartam hinni, hogy a méhecskés fotóm lett a Nyár Durrellnél kategória győztese.

But let’s see who are the winners of the other categories, and who is the overall winner of the competition.

Lássuk hát, kik nyerték meg a többi kategóriát illetve ki lett a verseny fő győztese.

The Junior category winner was the 13 year old Georgia Dicks with her aye-aye portrait.

A Junior kategóriát a 13 éves Georgia Dicks nyerte egy véznaujjú maki portréjával.

The winner of the Animal Behavior category was Ross Nieuwburg.

Az Állati viselkedés kategória győztese Ross Nieuwburg lett.

The Animal Portraits category winner and the overall competition winner was Ian Groves.

Az Állat portré kategóriát és egyben a versenyt pedig Ian Groves nyerte.

The judging panel consisted of Dr. Lee Durrell, Steve Wellum (photographer) and Dominic Wormell (Head of Mammals). The fact that Lee Durrell saw my photo and together with her colleagues she decided that it is the best one in its category, is a great honour for me.

A zsűri tagjai Dr. Lee Durrell, Steve Wellum (fotós), illetve Dominic Wormell (az emlős részleg vezetője) voltak. A tény, hogy Lee Durrell látta a fotómat és társaival együtt úgy döntött, hogy a legjobb a kategóriájában, számomra hatalas megtiszteltetés.

Unlike other photo competitions on the internet, besides recognition and experience we received some really awesome prizes as well. Every winner’s prize was a little bit different, so I can only tell you what I got: a night for two at the Durrell Wildlife Camp, a meal for two at the Dodo Restaurant and a 20×16 inch print of my photo. So it looks like I am going to return to Jersey in May, and this time I am taking Will with me and show him around the wildlife park and the island.

Más internetes fotóversenyekkel ellentétben mi nem csak elimerést meg tapasztalatot nyertünk, hanem igazi, kézzel fogható és rengeteg örömöt okozó dolgot is. Mindenkinek kicsit különböző volt a nyereménye, így én csak a sajátomról tudok beszámolni: szállás egy éjszakára két fő részére Durrellnél, étkezés két fő részére a Dodo étteremben, és a beküldött fotóm 50×40 cm-es méretben kinyomtatva. Úgyhogy úgy néz ki, májusban visszatérek, és ezúttal Willnek is megmutatom az állatkertet meg Jersey szigetét.

The real reason why I write about the competition only now is the fact that I finally managed to have the photo framed. It is hanging on the wall of my flat, and every time I look at it I remember that awesome day spent at Durrell’s. If you are curios, you can read about it here.

Az igazi ok pedig, amiért csak most írok a versenyről az az, hogy a fotót sikerült végre bekereteztetnem. Most ott lóg a falon, és ahányszor rápillantok, a Durrell állatkertben töltött nap jut eszembe. Aki kíváncsi, itt olvashat róla bővebben.

If you’ve been to the Durrell Wildlife Park (or you are planning to visit soon) and you managed to take lots of photos, it’s worth paying attention, because the competition will be announced this year again.
