How to Make Homemade Sunscreen

How to Make Homemade Sunscreen

Have you ever thought of making Homemade Sunscreen instead of using store-bought UV protection? When traveling to warm, sunny places, like Southwest Florida, there is no doubt that packing sunscreen is essential. More recently, people have begun to question sunscreen because of potentially harmful chemicals they may contain, the effect they have on the environment and coral reefs, and more. Homemade sunscreen can be a safe and natural alternative to store-bought creams or sprays.

Sunscreen Recipe

Homemade Sunscreen Serving Size (1 Cup)

  • ½ cup almond oil or olive oil
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup beeswax
  • 2 tbsp. zinc oxide
  • 1 tsp. red raspberry seed oil
  • 1 tsp. carrot seed oil
  • 2 tbsp. shea butter

  • In a pint-sized glass jar, combine the almond or olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and shea butter.
  • Fill a medium-sized saucepan with four cups of water and place it on the stovetop over medium heat.
  • Put a lid on the glass jar loosely and place it in the saucepan on the stovetop.
  • Shake the jar occasionally to mix the ingredients as they melt.
  • When all the ingredients are completely melted, stir in the zinc oxide and remove the jar from the saucepan.
  • Stir the ingredients in the jar a few more times while it cools to make sure zinc oxide is well combined.
  • You can continue to keep the sunscreen in the same glass jar or move it to another container if desired.
  • Store the sunscreen at room temperature or in the refrigerator to increase its shelf life.
