First Crystal Cruise and the beginning of a legend |
Crystal Cruises was born in 1990 with the launch of the Crystal Harmony--the most luxurious ship of its time with penthouse suites manned by butlers, balconies, seamless service and some of the best food ever served afloat. Long before the ship was launched and began her first Alaska voyages in 1990, my husband Richard and I, along with a few other journalists, were invited to watch her being built at Fincantieri Shipyard in Italy. it was so exciting to see this luxurious vessel under construction but even more so sailing on her.
While the Harmony was eventually taken out of service and a tough act to follow, the Los Angeles cruise company continued her legacy with newer ships, the Symphony and Serenity offering even more balconies, more dining selections in alternative venues inspired by one of LA's finest restaurants, Valentino called Prego and one from Master Chef Nobu called Silk Road. Both continue to excite passengers palates today.
Although the cruise line was (and is) based in Los Angeles, it was owned by a Japanese company that sold it a little over a year ago to Genting Hong Kong that has been taking it outside the box by adding luxurious riverboat/yachts, more builds, a super elite jet and even a ship yard to its portfolio.
