Dear Taipei,

I have a little secret to share – despite teetering on the edge of thirty years old, I still don’t know how to drive.

Whenever I mention this fact to anyone here, they immediately assume I just can’t drive in Taiwan. Many a conversation has panned out like this:

Friend: “Ah, I miss being able to drive, don’t you?”
Me: “Erm, well, I can’t drive…”
Friend: “Yeah, I don’t have my international license either.”
Me: No, I can’t drive anywhere. I don’t have a license in Australia either.

I do realise that in order to call myself a fully-functioning adult I should be able to drive by now, but alas, I haven’t still haven’t learned how.

So how do I get around here in Taipei? When I don’t want to spend 40 minutes on public transport to get to a place that’s only 8 minutes by car, or I don’t want to spend a ton on a taxi, I’ll just use an Uber. Which brings me to the whole point of this post…

In my experience, Uber is usually a lot cheaper than catching a taxi, and the service is really great. I honestly can say that I’ve only ever had great rides with friendly and professional drivers.
