Many people think that if they want to fish, all they need to do is grab a rod, some bait and they are ready to cast off. But you can’t just do that. Although, they may seem like hassle Fishing Licenses are very important and they are the reason why you are still able to get out there and wrangle some big fish!

This short guide will explain Fishing licenses, what you need to do to get them, and how to make sure you are following the law. This will ensure you don’t have to pay any fines and don’t have how throwback that great catch you spent all day trying to find.

Why Fishing Licenses?

Fishing licenses were developed for the same reason hunting licenses were–that is to ensure that the number of a certain species stays above certain sustainable level. This makes sure that it will not go extinct and as a result damage the ecosystem.

Fishing licenses are granted during specific times of year so that there is plenty of time for the stock to regenerate. Without it, overfishing would be a huge problem and we likely would not be able to even find some of our favorite fish.

How do I get a Fishing License?

Every state and even locality may have their own regulations of fishing. These were designed with local species in mind so when you can fish, where you can fish and what can fish may be be within some very certain guidelines. The best thing do is a Google search specifically for where you want to go.

The good news is that in most places fishing licenses are not only cheap, but also easy to get. Nowadays you can do many of them online and just print them off. Best of all they are usually valid for at least an entire season if not a year or more!

What If I Get Caught Without a License or Don’t Follow the Rules?

To be honest, in many places it is very difficult for wildlife protection officers to patrol an entire region. For this reason, a fair amount of people just don’t get a license. The problem with this is that depending on where you are, the fine can far exceed the cost of the fishing license.

For example, a year-round license in Texas costs residents $40 while the fine for fishing without one can be a high as $250-$1000. And there are even steeper penalties depending on if you are  caught if ecological protection zones or reeling in a bigger catch than you are allowed.
