Reopening of Dior Boutique, Ave Montaigne

The reopening of the flagship Dior Boutique on Ave. Montaigne was timed to coincide with Fashion Week in early March, and I decided to pay a visit.

The boutique was inaugurated in 1946 by Christian Dior, just a month before he launched his legendary and historic New Look collection in 1947, which changed the face of fashion forever. Shuttered for two years, the boutique was extensively renovated and redesigned by New York based architect Peter Marino, who has designed stores for Chanel and Louis Vuitton globally. Marino stated it was one of the most intricate and challenging design challenges, during the pandemic, and used over 100 materials.

The result is stunning and the boutique oozes with luxe and glam, and each of the myriad of salons are sumptuously and stylishly decorated with no detail unattended to. Measuring 108,000 feet and laid out over two floors, the store is massive, and you can easily but pleasantly get lost and not mind it. It houses almost the entire range of the Dior products including men’s and women’s fashion lines, cosmetics, perfume, handbags and small leather goods, luggage, jewelry, shoes, fine china, crystal and glassware, and an haute couture department. The Monsieur Dior Restaurant is gorgeously decorated with houndstooth covered club chairs with delicate black and white china plates and colored crystal glasses and if you have a sweet tooth head to the pastry bar.

I climbed the grand circular stairway to the second floor and was greeted at the top with a 26-foot-tall rose sculpture by Isa Genzken. Other art installations in the store are a metal sculpture by John Chamberlain, a video installation by media artist Jennifer Steinkamp, measuring 10-feet in width, and in the entrance dome, sheets of white paper float from the ceiling from artist Paul Cocksedge.

Other services the boutique offers are custom made tuxedos, a demi-spa with a menu of facials and skin treatments, and an atrium garden space with lounges, towering glass walls, and plants. Last but not least, if you want the all out, VIP treatment, reserve La Suite Dior, a private apartment that comes with staff of six to eight people available 24-hours a day, who can arrange almost anything, from having a personal shopper take you around the store to having a private chef cook dinner.

Stay tuned for more Dior next week, when I post about their new museum.
