Last week I was invited to the opening of Jazz Club paintings and drawings by Aurelie Bordenave at Hotel Pont Royal in Saint Germain des Pres.
Every three-months Hotel Pont Royal invites a different artist or photographer to present a show in its library lounge off the lobby.
Paris based artist and illustrator Aurelie Bordenave attended jazz concerts from 2007 to 2010 and later sketched the musicians she watched at the concerts. She compiled her drawings into two books, which were the basis for her first exhibition at the Sete Jazz Festival in 2009. In 2010 Bordenave was invited to a LiveDrawing concert in Paris and from there she regularly sketched live at conferences, symposiums, and jazz concerts.
In post war Paris, Hotel Pont Royal had a jazz club in lower level frequented by the Saint Germain literary set including Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Hemingway, and Marguerite Duras.
Discovering the rich history of jazz at the hotel, Bordenave dedicated her latest works to her happy find. The small drawings lined on the shelves of the warmly lit library depict current day jazz musicians. The mix of black and white and color drawings are done with Chinese ink and watercolor on paper in a 20 X 30cm and a 30X40cm format, framed.
Musicians included in the delightful, whimsical works include Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves, Thierry Gautier, Mike Reinhardt Trio, Thomas Dutronc, and Jeff Beck. Lindy Hop is a vivacious series of Lindy dancers stomping the dance floor.
A talented duet of jazz musicians played during the reception adding inspiration and momentum to the entertaining evening.
