03/03/2016 - This was by far the best trek in New Zealand so far! It's not too long a walk to go up and come down in 1 day but you will need the whole day and if you want to take your time, you can always stay overnight at Mueller Hut. Book ahead through the Department of Conservation website (http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/things-to-do/walking-and-tramping/)
Climb the 1800 + stairs for stunningly spectacular views of mountains, glaciers, clouds, rivers and lakes. Are you prepared to take on the mountains? Labelled an advanced track by the Department of Conservation, this track required decent physical fitness but no particular alpine skills on a clear summer day. I heard a whisper that last year this Mountain was the base of a base jump! Crazy!
From Mueller Hut, there is a 60 minute side trip (30 min up and down) to the summit of Mount Olivier if you are prepared to clamber your way over the debris of scattered boulders. Stay tuned for full panoramic shots of the Mount Cook region.
