Australia isn't the only place with a Sunshine Coast you know! I'm talking about the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia! Just a short ferry ride from Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, Gibson's is the main jumping off post!

Had I known what I know now, I would have earmarked more time so that I could have ventured further afield and deeper along the Sunshine Coast, exploring some of the areas accessible only by water. Savary Island was high upon my list after I heard about the gleaming white sands and the warm shallow waters surrounding this tropical island, but unfortunately, it was just too much ground to travel over the course of a weekend.

Some of my favourite spots were found by chance as I drove along the coast without a plan and willing to explore every little coastal turnoff and bay. There was a cute little private cove around Half Moon Bay and excellent swimming opportunities at Ruby Lake. The photographs taken at Ruby Lake just did not do it justice!

After a hard day spent lazing in the sun, I enjoyed strolling along Gibsons beach looking for the local herons fishing for their supper. By day, the local deer frequented the garden of our air bnb property, which was an absolute gem.

The waters around Gibson's may appear calm but this serenity only masks what lies beneath. Some pals of mine were doing a spot of kayaking when they were interrupted all of a sudden by a breaching orca nearby. It really freaked them out!

The picture below is a bit of a curveball as it was actually taken at the Wreck Beach in Vancouver, but it made sense to display it with the Sunshine Coast shots as it is the last we will be seeing of the beach for a little while, as we head to rainy England.

Whilst Gibson is set up for tourists with a good mix of eating options, the wilderness is just around the corner and I often rushed home from dinner fully expecting to encounter a local bear.
