This guide is brought to you with support from American Express, a Point Hacks commercial partner. All opinions expressed are solely those of Point Hacks.

1. Earn in the air with airline partners

With Velocity’s hand-picked selection of partner airlines, you can earn big even when you’re not flying Virgin Australia! That next jaunt to Milan, expedition to Vancouver or getaway to the Maldives could be earning you thousands of Velocity Points.

Yes, stretch out in Air Canada Signature Class direct to Vancouver, and earn Velocity Points on the fare.

It’s simple, really. When you fly with eligible Velocity partner airlines and put your Velocity Frequent Flyer membership number against the ticket, you could be rewarded with Velocity Points and Status Credits! (Not sure what those are? Never fear, we’ll talk about them later on).

Major airlines you can earn Velocity Points with include:

  • Virgin Australia
  • United Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Air Canada
  • Etihad
  • Qatar Airways

Much of Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and the Pacific Islands are covered with the Velocity Frequent Flyer program.

2. Use your Velocity Points across a vast network

You’ve earned the Points, now how about using them? Once again, you have access to an excellent network that covers much of the world. Your Velocity Points will take you to almost all corners of the world, and at tantalisingly low rates as well!

For example, with 139,000 Velocity Points^ (plus $494.61 taxes, fees and carrier charges), you could fly in Business Class luxury one-way from Brisbane to London. That’s excellent value, considering you’re spending almost a day on the plane and at airport lounges.

The same 139,000 Velocity Points could also fly you from Australia to other destinations in Europe and the USA (including as far as New York) one-way in Business Class with a partner airline^ (plus taxes, fees and carrier charges).

This search was conducted on 21 October 2022, this is for a one-way business class flight with Singapore Airlines, plus $494.61 in taxes, fees and carrier charges^.

You can use your Velocity Points for all the airlines mentioned above, plus more such as South African Airways and Hawaiian Airlines.

Sydney to Melbourne in Economy? Brisbane to New York in Business? London to Abu Dhabi in First Class? All of these flights can be booked as great-value Reward Seats with Velocity Points^.

New Card Members who sign up for the American Express® Velocity Platinum Card can receive bonus Velocity Points, helping you get there sooner. You could use that card to pay the taxes, fees and carrier charges and earn even more Velocity Points.

3. Go for Gold (or Platinum) with Family Pooling

Let’s face it, holidays are easier when you can breeze through the airport priority check-in and relax in the airport lounge. And that’s possible, even when you’re flying in Economy! The trick is to have elite airline status for those sweet perks.

Velocity Frequent Flyer members start at the base Red tier. But you can work your way up to Silver, Gold and Platinum. In a nutshell, Gold and Platinum is where it’s at. Priority airport processing and Virgin Australia Lounge access perks come as standard – plus you can usually bring a guest.

As a bonus, Virgin Australia Lounges also allow three children (aged 2-17) in addition to your guest. Children under the age of 2 aren’t considered to be guests and can enter with you as well.

Bring the family to Virgin Australia’s domestic lounges with Gold or Platinum status.

It takes 500 Status Credits and four eligible flights to become a Velocity Gold member. Usually, you’d have to earn all those Status Credits on your own. But with Family Pooling, up to four children and one additional adult can make attaining status a piece of cake. All of the Points and Status Credits they earn can be allocated to you, instead. (Terms and conditions apply)

Let’s say you’re taking a family holiday with Virgin Australia from Perth to Gold Coast, via Melbourne. On an Economy Choice fare (which includes luggage), you would earn 100 Status Credits.

But if you’re travelling with your partner and three kids, who are all Family Pooling to you, then you’d also receive their haul, for a total of 500 Status Credits (plus a bucketload of Velocity Points). And that’s Gold status done and dusted with just one trip.
