God’s own country, Kerala is having a love hate relationship with me for years since the very first time I arrived here following a formal invitation by a Malayalee friend as I didn’t want to lose the chance of  visiting Kerala at any cost. I went around the state and visited many cities. I loved it so much that even returning to Delhi, I couldn’t get the visuals out of my head for a very long period of time. I waited for another opportunity to land there but my hatred for Kerala grew as it didn’t invite me for months. As a professional, I need excuses to take a leave for about a week and I was not able to find them.

And then one fateful morning, I just knew I had to make the trip with my mother. I had the excuse. She was mostly sick by the allergies and the western medicines had given her nothing but some of the most irritating side effects and I knew in my heart that Ayurveda therapies reduces the possibilities of side effects to zero and this was perfect. So I packed my bags and hopped onto the plane. The land of gods awaits me.

This time around, it was less for the sightseeing and more for my mother’s betterment. I was surprised to know how many Kerala Ayurveda institutions do this place is actually having. From the large institutions to the smaller ones and a few among them could give any big city corporate funded hospital a pretty good run for their money. The reasons that I understood later were not very surprising. The greenery in the state is some sort of a boon to the mankind as a whole. In Kerala, nature grows some of its most essential and life giving herbs and plants. And the land is just the perfect one for them to grow unabashedly. I talked with an Ayurveda practitioner about the same and he told me about some rare flora and fauna that happens to be growing only in Kerala and treatment wise, they are far effective than the western ones.

We chose one centre for the Ayurvedic centre and began the treatment. A few massages, some medicines and a few days of Yoga and meditation had a wonderful effect on my mother’s health and she was feeling fresher than ever. It turned her allergies around and too at a cost that is almost half of what we would have spent on the western medicines.

Ayurveda is an ancient science that found its root right here in the land of Kerala and since many centuries, it has remained the same way even after many invaders have tried to destroy the cultural heritage of the people. People here are known to be some of the healthiest of people in the entire country and that is because of the sole reason that they have Ayurveda as an integral part of their day to day lives. I returned from Kerala with some good memories and a healthier mother. I am already looking forward to visiting this beautiful state again.
