Akihabara & Asukusa

Akihabara

Akihabara is the famous electronic District in Tokyo, where you can get great deals on the latest technology and game away until the early hours of the morning.

We visited Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera stores which have multiple floors, so expansive, you can get lost quite easily. The staff are super helpful telling you about the latest deals – definitely a photographers haven.

And take your passport with you to take advantage of tax free shopping. I got a great deal on a GoPro here.

@home Maid Cafe

Maid Cafes are very popular in the Akihabara district and are an intriguing glimpse into a Japanese sub-culture. If you have an open mind and are curious to see the waitresses dressed in cosplay maid outfits, then head to the @home café – one of the best and most famous in the area. @home Maid cafe is spread over 6 floors and you will just need to climb the stairs and join the queue for the floor you want to visit…. they all have different themes and there will be a queue which ever floor you choose.

Maid cafés were originally designed primarily to cater to the fantasies of male otaku, fans of anime, manga, and video games. However we didn’t find them too seedy and enjoyed the food and getting polaroid pictures taken with our maid.

The whole thing is a bit surreal, when you arrive you are officially made a “Master” and once you have ordered and your food / drinks arrive your maid will sit, chat and play silly games with you for a while.

Arcades, Gaming & Photo-booths in Akihabara

We spent most of the afternoon gaming in the Sega building, where there are many floors to explore, from classic arcade games to RPG card games games, dance games, music games, VR and much more. We were exhausted by the time we left having taken on the expert locals. You also must try the photo-booths! You will have no idea how to work one and the instructions will seem needlessly complicated, but you will get some fun memories.

Asakusa

This is one of the districts where Japan’s ancient past comes alive. It was Tokyo’s main entertainment district back in the 1600’s Edo Period. A much quieter district full of temples and people dressed up in traditional kimono dresses. There are many buddhist temples but the most famous being Sensō-ji, and it is worth a quick visit.

Sometaro Okonomiyaki Restaurant (Tripadvisor) is a great place to eat in Asukusa. Sitting on the floor following the step by step instructions to cook your own Okonomiyaki.

Okonomiyaki (literally means ‘grilled as you like it’) it is a savoury version of Japanese pancake, made with flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, meat/protein and topped with a variety of condiments.
