4 ideas for a great weekend

Hey folks, another long Weekend is upon us (Monday is a holiday because of Eid.). Have you thought about how you are going to spend it? While some of you may have lined up plans to put the weekend to good use, many others may not have done that. I know, I know. You have been too busy for that, right? Some of you may want to just curl up in bed or lie on the couch and watch Youtube. But trust me, while that may seem very attractive to you, there are much better ways to spend your time. Really.

Think about it. Here you are, crouched over a desk all day long. Or, watching inane stuff on TV and Youtube. From time to time, you just need to get away from it all, my friend. Just up and go! Breathe in some fresh rustic air, meet other people, learn a new Skill, go on a trek, …..do anything, but just get out of home. And what better time than a weekend to do all this?

So, here’s presenting the ‘great weekend planner’. A set of lovely ideas that will help you put your time and life to good use.

Here’s to a great weekend !

  1. Get some adventure

Go on an Adventure!!

This is all about pushing your boundaries. To use a phrase that the media has been using ad nauseum of late, get out of your comfort zone. Whatever be your age, there is always a thrill in doing something for the first time. Something you have never, ever done before. Perhaps, it is even a thing you have been afraid of doing so far. In a sense, it is about throwing your biases and fears to the winds, and challenging yourself to do more. An experience like this teaches you so much about your own personality and makes you much more confident.

Apart from giving you bragging rights with friends, of course.

These days, you don’t have to go to exotic places to paraglide, hang-glide, surf the waves, ride a hot air balloon or quad-bike. A range of such wonderful experiences is available in your own city. Just click here to check out the options available and choose the one you fancy. Try to pull in your colleagues or friends too. Having company only multiplies the fun.

If you are an adventure junkie, I have a simple recommendation for you: do all the above-mentioned activities back-to-back-to-back-to……. throughout the day!

  1. Let your body be pampered

Pamper yourself !

I don’t know about you, but every now and then, I want to let my body just go slack. Go limp like a sock. I want to lie back and do nothing. And while I am at it, I also want to get a wonderful body massage. And a foot rub. And a head massage. And a sauna. And a……you get the point.

I can’t explain how soothing all this is. It makes my aching head, eyes and muscles feel so relaxed, that I can literally feel the tension and aches oozing out of my body. I follow this up with a bout of deep sleep and when I wake up, boy, I am ready to take on the world !

I know you are tempted by the prospect too. So go on, give in to the temptation. Book yourself a session at a spa, sauna or massage parlor and let yourself be pampered.

  1. Learn a new skill

Learn the art of cooking.

Of late, I have been eager to learn new things in life. I am curious about how things work, curious to understand several concepts I learnt in school and forgot long ago. As part of this new-found curiosity, I also want to try my hand at different things. I mean, I want to pick up new skills and then see if I am any good at them.

A few months ago, for instance, I attended a 3-day cookery class and was introduced to the basics of how to cook. I followed this up by practising at home to hone my skill.  I can now confidently put together a decent meal all by myself. Not just that, in my spare time, I keep experimenting with ingredients and dishes, and whipping up my own versions of the classics. It is great fun.

Until I started cooking, I never knew that within the limited confines of the kitchen lies a whole new world! It has been a journey of self-discovery and constant improvement – something I had not anticipated when I started off.

Mountain biking and painting are next on my list of ‘things I should learn’.

We keep hearing about the importance of on-the-job training and upskilling at work. Equally important is to keep picking up new skills in life. They make us more confident and help us discover hidden aspects of our personality.

Like me, you could enroll in a class and learn something new. Here’s an interesting list to get you started.

  1. Sleep under the stars

Night trek!

How many of you have slept under the stars? Perhaps you did that in your childhood. When I was a child, our family used to often sleep on the terrace, especially in summer. It used to be great fun counting stars, trying to links them in different crazy patterns, feeling the cool breeze on our faces….. and finally, dozing off. Even now, I do that as often as possible. I get far away from the city and stay at a rustic homestay or in a farm. Sometimes, I find myself a good camping site. The idea is to bed down for the night out in the open.

Sleeping under the stars helps you gain a totally different perspective on life. Because your mind is at ease, you get into a contemplative frame of mind. Imagine having great conversations with your friends and really listening to them for a change. And if you have steaming cups of chai too, you will know bliss.

This simple act helps you stay in touch with nature, come closer to your loved ones and retain a degree of innocence in you. You will come back transformed.
