The three-month Buddhist celebration is almost over this day. Monks are allowed to leave the temple, and people gather for a month-long ritual called Thot Kathin to bring them food and offerings. Various events and celebrations are held all over Thailand. Traditionally made of banana trees and bamboo, boats are adorned with flowers and lamps and filled with offerings such as glutinous rice confectionery wrapped in banana leaves. 

Chulalongkorn Day

Every October 23, Thai people celebrate the life and reign of King Chulalongkorn on the anniversary of King Chulalongkorn’s death in 2010. Most restaurants, shops and other businesses are open, but government offices are closed on this holiday. Throughout Thailand, many Thais show respect for the great monarch by placing garlands and flowers on their equestrian statues in their hometown. In Phuket, local governments often celebrate the day with an orchestra playing the Thai National Anthem outside the State Capitol, with a wreath on the monument to King Chulalongkorn.
