If you’re looking for things to do in Little Havana, the original Miami Cuban neighborhood, you’re in luck! It’s a must visit during your trip and listed in any Miami neighborhood map.
Don’t be confused and expect an exact replica of Cuba’s capital, Havana. However, you will definitely see, taste, and feel the flavor of Cuba right here in Miami!
The heart of this neighborhood is South West 8th street or “Little Havana Calle Ocho” as the locals call it. Many wonder, is Little Havana Miami safe? Absolutely, locals and tourists fill this street during the day.
Here’s some great local tips to discover what is Little Havana like and enjoy this vibrant Cuban neighborhood.
Little Havana Walking Tour
Put on your walking shoes and start your visit at the Maximo Gomez Park, also known as Little Havana domino park, on the corner of S.W. 8th St and S.W. 15th Ave. Here you can find old Miami Cuban men playing dominos like they did in the old country. They don’t seem to mind tourists watching their games and taking discrete pictures.
Next, follow the sounds of salsa music as you exit the park and meander down to the Little Havana Cigar Factory, where you can watch experts roll cigars. Some stores along the way often have conga drummers and singers playing outside.
If you are feeling thirsty, it’s time to get a fresh coconut at the Los Pinarenos Fruiteria or try a cortadito Cuban coffee at one of the many outdoor coffee counters on the street. Cuban coffee is strong and sweet so here is a local tip: ask for a “clarito” to have milk with your coffee and say “poco azucar” if you don’t want too much sugar.
For lunch, you can find many great restaurants in Little Havana. For something casual, try the restaurant inside El Nuevo Ciglo Supermarket – corner of SW 8th St. & SW 13th Ave.- and their livelyMiami Cuban scene.
Their Cuban food is authentic and locals love the Cuban style oxtail stew, beans and rice, and fried plantains. If you want to try something different, checkout cozy Mi Rinconcito Mexicano, one of the best Mexican restaurants in Miami.
Things to do in Little Havana in the Afternoon
Save some room for dessert and head to Azucar Ice-Cream Factory. This unique Cuban ice-cream shop has a big mural of Celia Cruz inside – perfect for selfie pictures! – and loads of fun flavors. The local favorite is the “Abuela Maria” made with cream cheese, guava, and cookies.
After indulging on some ice-cream, perhaps you would like to burn off some calories at DAF (Dance Art Fitness) studio located above the ice-cream shop. The studio offers Afro-Cuban dance, Zumba, and many more fun dance classes.
Right across of the dance studio is Cubaocho Art Center, a top Latin music venue, where you can listen to live Cuban music in the afternoons and evenings. There is also a music library, airy courtyard, and bar where you can try a mojito, a traditional Cuban cocktail. The ambiance is laid back and feels “just like Cuba” according to many locals.
For dinner, it’s time to get back into your car and drive few minutes to West Flagler street to eat at La Camaronera Seafood Joint and Fish Market. This hole in the wall local favorite has a few seats inside and mostly standing room eating. Their specialty is “pan con minuta”, a delicious fried snapper sandwhich!
And last, but not least, if you still have energy to spare, experience the legendary Miami nightlife club Hoy Como Ayer, located on Calle Ocho. Locals swear by their nightly Latin live music. Go on a Thursday night and experience the unique latin funk music or check their website for the latest schedule.
