India’s Fertility tourism has attracted a number of childless couples from all over the world for treatment. The stringent laws, restricted access and surging costs have made people prefer India for undergoing assisted reproduction. The country’s fertility specialists and low-cost treatment options are the main driving factors.
Talking about it, Dr. Goral Gandhi Mumbai embryologist and an IVF specialist, explains that medical tourism for fertility issues is on a rise in the country. Catering to patients both in India and abroad, she shares how the overseas demand is leading to a boom in the industry.
“Reproductive tourism in India fits in the international trade in healthcare services. While the country provides a number of incentives to foreign patients, the most important factor that draws the patients is the cutting-edge fertility treatments that India provides at a considerably lower price. The standards maintained by good IVF labs in India are comparable to the best in the world” says the Founder, Director and Chief Embryologist at Indo Nippon IVF Fertility Clinic, Mumbai.
The state-of-the-art medical services, advanced technology, and expert panel of fertility specialist available within the target budget, make India one of the most favored global destinations for infertility treatments.
Fertility tourism in India includes health care services such as specialized high-quality treatment or diagnosis. Treatments available are wide-ranging such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete (sperms and eggs) donation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. Patients may opt for these services in India as they are either not available in their home countries or, if available, may not be of a certain standard or may not be within their financial reach.
“Most people who come to us, especially for IVF, go in for a travel package too, since they have come all the way to India,” said Kamal Parpyani, managing director of health tourism company Life Smile.
Although the unregulated laws in the country, and opening up of “too many” fertility clinics, have made patients careful as to whom to choose as their specialist. To which Dr. Goral Gandhi, Mumbai’s embryologist says, “Opting for an experienced doctor and embryologist can significantly impact your IVF outcome. Seeking fertility treatment is a major decision and requires a leap of faith, for which, couples should be thorough with their research before seeking reproductive assistance. Also, considering the IVF success rates of a clinic can help you choose the right clinic for you.”
According to a 2004 study, India could earn as much as $2 billion annually through medical tourism, and fertility tourism holds a considerable share of the revenue.
Although not strictly tourism, the fertility centers in the country promote treatment along with providing a therapeutic experience just like an “IVF holiday‟ or “A Holiday with a Purpose”, which aims at offering clients a relaxing and calming environment while undergoing fertility treatment.
Going through fertility treatment takes physical, emotional and financial commitment. Therefore, one should make sure that they get the best chance of success. India has made key advancements in the field of reproductive sciences over recent years, which has led to an incredible growth trajectory for successful IVF pregnancies. This has, in turn, made it a desired destination for couples to build their families.
