A few interesting facts about Big Ben

  • There is still a crack in the Bell which occurred in 1859. At the time, it was considered too difficult to remove the bell to repair it.
  • The bell is just over seven feet tall, and weighs about the same as an elephant. When it was cast in 1858, it took two weeks for the bell to cool down.
  • Big Ben chimes every fifteen minutes and can be heard from as far away as five miles
  • The first chime of Big Ben was heard on the 31st of May, 1859.
  • 'Big Ben’ is the nickname of the bell that resides at the top, but the clock tower itself is called the Elizabeth Tower.
  • Big Ben is one of the most commonly destroyed monuments in the movies. Most notable examples of Big Ben’s movie destruction include Independence Day, The Avengers (1998), V for Vendetta, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Day After Tomorrow, Reign of Fire, and getting smashed up by an alien ship flown by pigs in Doctor Who.
  • Big Ben is the biggest four-faced, chiming clock in the world.
  • During the Second World War, people from all over the world listened for Big Ben on the radio. His chimes meant that Great Britain had not been defeated.
