The Extraordinary Landmark – The Nut in Stanley, Tasmania!

An incredibly, extraordinary landmark lives in this region coined ‘The Edge of the World’.  Here in this historic town called Stanley, Tasmania you will find ‘The Nut’.    A solidified lava lake of a long-extinct volcano, towering 152m above the little town surrounding its base!  Regardless of our crazy-windy expedition, we thoroughly enjoyed the raw natural beauty found from every angle of the plateau of this unique attraction!  Why not join us for a walk around the top?  Let me show you around!

The Nut in Stanley, Tasmania:

The Nut itself will greet you from afar as you make your approach to this little historic coastal town.  Standing proud in the distance, it is incredible thinking about the fact that this peculiar shaped massif happens to be the core of a volcanic plug, an extinct volcano that is over 13 million years old!   The Nut is almost completely surrounded by water and towers 152 metres above sea level, giving Stanley a dramatic and unique backdrop.

The flat-top circular headland at the plateau of The Nut is worth a visit and we highly recommend you include it in your Tasmanian itinerary!  From the top there are 360° views taking in the little coastal town of Stanley, the Rocky Cape National Park and Highfield Historic Site, together with the rural surrounding farmland landscape.

There are two ways to get to the top of The Nut, the first of which is a short 10-20 minute walk following a pretty steep track to the plateau.  The second is the more leisurely way which includes a short 5 min ride on the Chairlift(See below for more info on prices).  At the top of the plateau you will find a well-defined, signposted circuit track to follow.  The chairlift tour operator recommended we walk in a clockwise direction as it is meant to be an easier walk!

The walk itself, which is listed as one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks, is around 2 km one-way.  The walk itself will take you around 1 hour to complete.  The track itself is rated as moderate difficulty.   There are however plenty of seating spots around the track for those of you who would like to rest up or simply enjoy the views surrounding you!

At the top of the nut you will find various wildlife around to keep you company.  You might find yourself enjoying the sight of a range of bird life including Mutton Birds, Peregrine Falcons, Silver Gulls and Orange Bellied Parrots.  We also enjoyed pausing a moment closer towards the end of the track, where we met a whole group of wallabies and pademelons munching away for lunch.

Along the track itself you will also find various lookouts.  Each lookout has incredible panoramic views, and you will find yourself endlessly snapping away photos, trying to capture the extraordinary beauty from every angle.  It is a perfect way to  get a view of Tasmania’s rugged, but beautiful, North West Coast.

Tips:

  • It is important for you to keep an eye on your kids up here due to the hazardous cliffs.
  • Make sure you hop into the loo with the kidlets before going up to the top, as there are no toilets on the plateau!
  • It is typical for the plateau of The Nut to get pretty windy and cold!  I actually got ear ache from my walk on the top from the crazy winds we had whilst there!  Whilst I had a hoodie on my jumper that I could use to protect my ears, it might be worthwhile popping in a beanie in your backpack for extra wind protection.
  • For an awesome look at The Nut from a different perspective and angle, head up toward Highfield Historic Site (Green Hills Road Stanley).  There you will find the historic remains of convict barracks.  From here you can get a glorious panoramic view over The Nut.

The Chairlift:

There is a chairlift that operates at The Nut, so if you prefer to avoid the steep zig-zag road to the top of the plateau you might choose to hop onto a short 5 min lift ride to the top instead!  The Chairlift is privately operated and operates 7 days a week (from 9:30am – 5:00pm) and caters for disabled visitors.  A lot of visitors choose to purchase a one way ticket in order to catch the lift to the top, but then choose to walk down the pathway to the bottom.  As it was super windy and pretty cold on our visit, we opted for a return ticket instead.

Please not that the Chairlift closed late-June to late-August.  More information on the Chairlift here.

Costs for the Chairlift:

Adults:
  • $16 Return
  • $10  One way
Children:

Family:
  • $45 Return
  • $30 One way

We truly loved our visit and exploration of The Nut in Stanley, Tasmania.  Whilst we did not stay in the region due to the fact that Stanley was only a single stop on our road-trip for the day, we did not get to explore the region properly.  So we encourage you, if you have the time, to stay here a bit longer!  ‘Take on the Edge of the world’ and see what it has to offer?
