Three Alternative Things To Do at Walt Disney World Resort

Three alternative things to do at Walt Disney World.

There’s Much More to Walt Disney World than Theme Parks and Character Dining

For the adventurous traveler, here are three off-the-beaten-track things to do on your next Walt Disney World vacation.

Surfing at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon

Surfing at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.

1. Go Surfing

Walt Disney World Resort may be located in Florida, but it’s not exactly close to any ocean waves (well, not within less than an hour’s drive at least). No worry. Disney Imagineers found a creative way to fill the itch to surf in any of their travelers.

The solution? Turn their gigantic wave pool into a surfer’s paradise.

The Surfing Experience at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park allows guests to learn to surf or for those who already surf, to master bigger waves in a controlled environment. All of this takes place in a Dawn Patrol session at this popular Walt Disney World water park.

The Disney surfing sessions take place before the water park opens and I can tell you that there’s nothing cooler than literally having the entire wave pool to yourself for wave after wave of perfect surfing magic. There are excellent professional surfing instructors on hand to teach newbies and there are two sizes of waves that you can try.

If you’ve always wanted to try surfing but never had the chance, I highly recommend trying this surfing experience at Walt Disney World.

2. Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

If surfing is maybe a little too athletic for you (or you really don’t want to get up before 6:00 a.m.), how about taking a hot air balloon ride high above the 43 square miles of Walt Disney World?

The Aerophile hot air balloon experience takes place out of Disney Springs and it’s fun for the whole family. There’s no better way than this to challenge your fear of heights. This balloon is not quite the basket that Dorothy and Toto were in. Instead, it is a very large, industrial size platform that can carry a large number of guests. The balloon is also tethered to the ground, so you don’t have to fear floating away to Oz. Still this is an impressive experience and the view of Walt Disney World from 400 feet in the air is quite spectacular on a clear day.

Advance reservations are not required, although you may have to wait for a session or two before you get your turn to fly on a busy day.

Horseback Riding, Fort Wilderness, Walt Disney World

3. Go Horseback Riding

If you love animals and nature and want to get away from the crowds, head on over to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground for an idyllic trail ride through the southern pines.

Horseback riding is available from the Tri Circle D Ranch, with 45-minute trail rides for guests aged 9 and up. These rides are a great family adventure and are perfectly suited to novice and intermediate riders alike. Of course, more experienced riders are also welcome to join in the fun!

This is one of my long-time personal favorite adventures at Walt Disney World that many guests are unaware of. So if you love horses, it’s worth looking into.
