Over the years of writing these blogs I’ve twice before featured this extraordinary woman here in Cuba. One time, on her 95th birthday, she gave me her top 5 tips for reaching old age. This included smoking two cigarettes a day, in succession; a thing she does at 9am each morning. Now it’s 5 years on and she’s 100. But it’s not just her age that’s remarkable, it’s who she is. And I suspect – without remotely understanding how – that the two things are probably, inextricably, linked.
Happily living in the present
Estrella (the Spanish word for ‘’star’’) never married, had children or had an intimate relationship. People often describe her as ‘’other-worldly’’. She is one of those rare beings who seems to live almost totally, and happily, in the present. The past has very little emotional charge and the future seems to concern her hardly at all. It’s not that she is consciously ‘’in the now’’ like some Buddhist practitioner. There’s no talk about ‘’being present’’ or its importance: she’s not remotely intellectual. She’s just naturally there.
If anyone close to her goes away it’s no big deal as long as someone else is around to take care of her. And when they return – whether it’s a week, 2 months or 3 years later – she smiles, says your name (if it’s not been too long and she remembers you) and then simply asks where you’ve been. No push or pull. The only exceptions are her loud and insistent demands for things she needs – right there and then! – like the bathroom, a ciggie or to go back to bed. Well, no-one’s perfect.
Here she is, then – Estrella Otano. Join with me in celebrating this remarkable woman and her life.
