Krakow to Gdansk

Krakow is situated in the south of Poland while Gdansk is placed on the country’s north. Poland is a relatively big country and the direct distance between the two main Polish cities is 486km. (301miles). But the length of a driving route is 589km (365miles) and driving time is estimated for about 6 hours and if you are travelling by train you will cover 620km (385 mles) and it takes 5 hours 40 minutes. Or you can fly. So we did with LOT from Krakow Airport (John Paul II International Airport Krakow – Balice) to Gdansk Airport (Gdansk Lech Walesa International Airport). We name those both airports international but they are quite small. And modern. It takes 55 minutes by plane to get from Krakow to Gdansk. From the mountainous southern Poland to the coastal North.

“Bizarrely enough not many foreign tourists realize that Poland does have access to the sea. It is not only a little strip of land that is in close relation with the Baltic Sea but the whole northern border of Poland consists of coast line. This means 440 km or if you prefer more than 270 miles of amazing sandy beaches, beautiful spas and seaside resorts. Surprise, surprise!? “

Well, there is more: there is Gdansk–Gdynia–Sopot forming The Tri-City. The three in one will certainly woo both you and your partner. Well, Gdansk certainly wooed my partner who thought that it would be a typical dockyard city. Read – Rough. Nothing like, nothing like.

“One of Poland’s most beautiful cities has played a major role in history, especially in the 20th century. It was the 1939 ‘flash point’ of World War II and then in 1980 the birthplace of the Solidarnosc labour movement ushering the end of Communist domination in Eastern Europe.”

Gdansk like Krakow is a Polish city that has to be visited if you are (or not) into history or if you are into beautiful places.  Gdansk with its  Old Town and the main tourist attraction that is the central Dluga street (Long Lane) is just stunning.

When you are in Gdansk you cannot miss The European Solidarity Centre, the museum devoted to the history of Solidarity, the Polish trade union and civil resistance movement. Here, in Gdansk Shipyard Europe started to change. The wind of changes started blow from here. Have you ever heard about Lech Walesa? The museum is spacious, very modern and extremely interesting with its informative exhibits. You need a little more than one hour to get through the whole thing. The admission to the museum is 17 PLN. It is worth every Zloty.

Gdansk left my sweet partner with his mouth wide open in astonishment. There was a wow moment. Well, there were many wow moments. Even the cold Baltic sea hasn’t cooled Peter. He mentioned he could even put his foot in the water, providing (of course) that there was extremely hot weather to accompany it..
