International Love Stories from the TourRadar Team

Sometimes we discover love in the most unusual circumstances and places, when we are least expecting it. And when we meet that special someone from across the globe, some of us are willing to go to the edge of the earth to follow and embrace it. While the thought of leaving one’s country to pursue love may seem daunting and even downright crazy to some, to others it is exhilarating and quite possibly the beginning of an incredible lifelong adventure and partnership.

Here are six magical stories about how TourRadar team members found true, international love and were willing to take a leap of faith. Their fairytale love stories take them around the world—both literally and figuratively. These couples are proof that love has no boundaries or borders, and anything is possible when you follow your heart.

Snow is Very Fun
Adrianna, Partnerships

Her story: While living in Japan, a tall, dark South African karaoke’d into my life. I said “yes” to a question popped at the top of Mount Sinai. He climbed a mountain for me, which is completely out of character for him. I said “I do” on a beach in Thailand. This was completely in character as it was the first place we travelled to, together. I said “he’s perfect” the day our baby was born in England. After persuading him that “snow is very fun” (especially with a board), he moved to Canada for me. 5 continents and 55 countries later, he still remains my favourite singer.

About Adrianna: Adrianna’s love for travel was sparked after a month long trip to Europe during University. Since then, she has lived all over the globe and is always on the hunt for new and interesting places to explore. Outside of travel, Adrianna loves to sit back and share a beautiful meal with her friends.

Hot Gravy
Allison, Performance Marketing

Her Story: Paulo and I met for the first time in 1998 when my family travelled to Austria to visit his family. Our fathers have been close friends since the 70’s when my dad was an exchange student in Austria. During our visit, thirteen year-old ever-so-charming-Austrian-Brazilian Paulo was nervous and spilled an entire pot of hot gravy on me. The next time we saw each other wasn’t until fifteen years later during Paulo’s US West Coast roadtrip. You could say we hit it off this time. Four long months later I packed my bags and moved to Austria to begin an amazing adventure. Hands down the best decision of my life. One year later we got engaged during a “top-secret” helicopter proposal in Denmark, and six months ago we had a magical wedding on the sea in Croatia, surrounded by our close friends and family from Austria, the US and Brazil.

About Allison: Allison is originally from the pacific northwest of the US and relocated to Austria in 2013 for true love. She loves long runs, yoga, tennis, playing the piano, going to concerts, and travelling with her man. She has a special affinity for Mexico and Mexican food, and in her down-time she tries to improve her German skills.

Caribbean Love
Carla, Customer Support

Her Story: Gerardo and I met working on cruise ships together. I was only one month into my new “on board” life when I caught my first glance of him in the crew elevator behind a kitchen cart. I thought he was cute, but that was it. Little did I know that this would be the man I would marry a year later!? With the beautiful Caribbean as our backdrop, and the fact that my birthday is his country’s Independence Day, it was the perfect coincidence to begin a good talk. Shortly after, he moved across the Atlantic from Guatemala to my home country of Portugal where we began a new life together, full of both challenges and joy, and of course travelling whenever we get a chance. 5 years later we moved to Austria to continue this great adventure and our love story continues happily ever after!

About Carla: Carla began travelling with her parents at the age of 7 with the “Portuguese Discoveries” in her blood and a desire to conquer the world. As she grew up, her studies and experience afforded her the opportunity to work all over the world, eventually landing her in Austria. Carla loves experiencing new cultures, eating and talking (in that order).

Apres Ski Love Shenanigans
Carly, Head of Community

Her Story: In 2011 I moved from Australia to Europe for work and of course for more travel! I was working as a ski rep in a small fairytale village in Austria, when I met Stefan in an Apres ski bar. He offered me a flaming sambuca shot as a “local specialty.” When he attempted to light it on fire in my mouth, I accidentally spat it back into his face! Romantic huh? Luckily he laughed and we spent the whole night chatting. He was from the village, so we had a perfect romantic week of skiing together, followed by 6 months of long distance dating when I returned to tour guiding around Europe. We were married just 8 months after we first met and have been living happily in Vienna ever since. Living proof you CAN meet a nice guy in a bar, and it might even change your life.

About Carly: Carly is a travel-addicted Aussie whose wanderlust began when she first backpacked around Europe as a fresh faced twenty-something. She loves relaxing on a beach, brunch with friends, blogging, visiting the European hotspots all year round, and surprise travel adventures!

Chasing the Sunshine
Jillian, Customer Support

Her Story: I met Adam in the summer between my second and third year of University. On our first night out, he told me about his plans to spend the next year working in Australia, then looked me right in the eyes and said, “You should come.” A million thoughts went through my head; school, work, all the factors that made this seem like an unwise idea. I opened my mouth to express these concerns, but feeling explorative (and a little love-struck), the only word I could materialize was “Okay!” This was in May. By October, we had moved across the world together and into our first home; a ‘97 station wagon with a mattress in the back. After our incredible adventure we returned to Toronto, found an apartment, and I finished school. Six years later and we are still together, travelling whenever we get the chance, and always chasing the sunshine.

About Jillian: Jillian is a Toronto-based travel enthusiast and facilitator who realized her love of discovery when she spent a year working in Australia in 2010. Armed with a notebook and a raging case of wanderlust, she loves to explore the world and share her stories. Even though she currently lives in landlocked Canada, she is always chasing the ocean and her next great adventure!

The Love Boat is Real!
Melissa, Key Accounts

Her Story: On my journey to self-discovery, as a young 20-something Canadian fresh out of college, I found myself travelling through Europe to discover the world instead of immediately jumping into the workforce to pay off my student loans. Luckily for me I nailed two tasks at once by landing a fantastic job as a fitness instructor on a luxury cruise ship!  As a bonus, I met a handsome Austrian officer who not only wined and dined me in exotic places like Bora Bora, the Namibian desert and the Amazon jungle to name a few, but I met my future best friend and partner for life. It was amazing to sail around the world for 6 years and after celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary we remain on this travel adventure, allowing our two children to tag along. #thanksloveboat

About Melissa: Melissa is a first generation Canadian whose love for travel, family and career have taken her literally to every corner of the earth. She and her family now call Vienna home. And her two children have not slowed her down, but rather have expanded her “travel posse.”
