Looking good on the road, given the conditions backpackers can find themselves in, can be somewhat difficult when hopping country to country. But that’s not to say it isn’t possible, as with a little bit of fore-thought, a bit of well-allocated budget and a little bit of creativity, even the most hard-up backpackers can adjust their image to look all the more sharper as they explore the world.

Keep it Simple

Backpacker gear should be simple rather than flashy. You’ll be amazed at what you can do with a pair of jeans, they’re versatile, durable and comfortable for travel. And you can get away with wearing them in a range of scenarios, from nights out to urban exploring, they are the type of simple fashion staple that suit backpacker well.

The same goes for a couple of light T-shirts. Pick up a couple every couple of months. They’re cheap enough, comfortable enough and, if you go for neutral colour, are again a very simply way to make up a good look.

Head-Wear

Head gear can work very well when switched around outfits. Scarfs (for both girls and boys), especially the Khmer types that can be picked up easy enough in Southeast Asia, can be worn in a range of ways, from bandanas to snood’s and in many combinations on top of the head.

Elsewhere there are sunglasses. A great pair of cool-looking glasses is worth spending money on before you head out to travel. Durable, robust, well-made pairs, that have a great look are well worth the value than a fake pair that breaks in seconds. Ray-Ban sunglasses are a popular choice, the classic style has lived on for generations and backpackers find them to be a great accompaniment to many different style changes out in the city, beach and even hiking in the mountains.

Accessories

Backpacks or fanny packs in place of a purse or wallet? There’s no real excuse for that, other than wanting to look like a naïve tourist of course. Accessories then, can really make a difference when it comes to accentuating your look, especially well chosen ones or ones sourced locally from sustainable manufacturers.

The same goes for belts, bands and jewellery. A little inexpensive necklace, bracelet or new pair of earrings can really help add a little extra something to an outfit, and finding places that sell such items is hardly difficult in the many markets and arts and crafts shops you’ll come across on the road.

Totes Bag

Totes bags are compact, lightweight and can be used for a whole range of things. You can use them down the beach to carry your gear, you can use them to help with the shopping and they look cool too. Sometimes you’ll often even get totes bags given to you for free in hostels or by tour companies you join. They’re useful, and can really help add a little flair to your day-to-day look. Don’t underestimate them.
