The Cliffs of Moher is Ireland’s #1 natural attraction and one of the most visited places in Ireland. When you visit, you will see scores of tour buses and hundreds of cars (over 1 million visitors every year).
When we first set eyes on the Cliffs of Moher, we had a feeling of ‘what is the fuse all about’ because the first sighting from the visitor center is at a somewhat unimpressive angle. You must walk up the steps to the right and/or make the short climb to the left to fully appreciate this wonderful place. We did both...

First, taking the stairs to the right unveiled the famous sight in a much better way (see photo). For the best view, pay the small fee and climb up O’Brien’s Tower (built in 1835) at the top (about 15 minute walk). The entirely vertical cliffs of black limestone are over 700 feet high towering over the white ocean waves below... a beautiful sight.

Then return down the stairs and continue up the path to the left for a completely different and, in our opinion, better view of the Cliffs of Moher (see photo above). Go a bit further than the rock wall to the South Platform for the best views (about 10-15 minute walk). Because we arrived in the afternoon (like many who visit), the sun was shining better from this vantage point and it can be magnificent. Here there is a smaller rock formation away from the cliffs called the Stack.

Enjoy the Cliffs of Moher for what they are without the hype – one of Ireland’s most beautiful places. Take your photos but also put your camera away and just take in the Cliffs of Moher. Birds that nest in the rock fly around, wave crash below, and Ireland’s green flowered landscape wraps around the black rock to make up a very enjoyable experience we have never seen before.

Some background: The Cliffs of Moher were formed about 320 million years ago when this area was much warmer and located at the mouth of a river. The river brought down sand that formed the rock formations we see today. The Cliffs of Moher are home to about 40,000 birds (29 different species) including the famous Puffins (see photos).

Travel tips on visiting the Cliffs of Moher: There is a large parking lot where they charge per person to visit the Cliffs of Moher. Interestingly, sit into the hillside, there is a Visitor’s Centre to also enjoy. The exhibits are somewhat interesting and won’t take a lot of time to go through them. There is also a café and a somewhat interesting gift shop and other shops (see photo) if you want to pick up some Irish crafts and souvenirs.

The Cliffs of Moher range for about 8 miles along the Atlantic Ocean. If you want an even better view and experience, you may consider doing a cruise out of Doolin. Bus tours to the Cliffs of Moher, that also visit a couple of other interesting sites, are offered from several cities in the area (ex: Galway).

Travel advise about visiting Ireland:While visiting Ireland, we learned a few important lessons. The beauty of our Ireland experience was more about the genuine Irish people and beauty of the countryside, not so much about how many important sites and buildings there are to visit. We found the best pub experience in the world in Ireland. So, slow down, enjoy the vibrantly green countryside, the Irish people, and visit a pub or two when you ‘fancy a pint’.
