Halloween Mega 2014

It was the end of October and this could only mean one thing: Time for the Annual Halloween Mega Event. We had visited for the 2013 event and the 2012 event and had enjoyed them a lot. This year, due to difficulties with the venue, the Mega was held outside in a marquee. As we were having such a warm October this didn’t make too much of a difference and the committee did so well to reorganise it at the last minute and keep it together.

The event was held at Wakeley Woods with a day caching and night caching series put out for the event. The day Caches included 10 lab caches as well, which was the first time at a Halloween Mega that we’ve seen them.

We started the day by heading to the marquee full of the usual caching store faces and a few other mega committees.

After catching up with a few friends we grabbed the handouts for the lab caches and day caches and headed off into the forest with Stones2005.

Like the previous year, the caches weren’t in a straight forward loop around the forest, so there was lots of exploring to do so that we could find them all. The lab caches were mixed within the other caches too so we were able to grab them as we headed around.

Here’s a selection of some of the day caches…

The Tower lab cache

Ram Man

Gnasher day cache

Finger Lickin’ Good day cache

We took a break from caching and popped to the pub for a rest and food before the night caches were released. After the pub we headed back to the marquee and patiently waited for the night cache release. While we were waiting it was the fancy dress competition. There were some pretty scary creatures lurking around the marquee as well as a very creative pumpkin carving.

Once the night caches had been released we grabbed our torches and headed off into the night. Like last year, the caches were very creative. Our favourite was a new one for this Mega: Megaphobia. It was a huge spider hanging from the trees!

Megahurtz

Maiden Northampton

The Halloween Mega was a very long day. We walked about 17 miles, found 57 caches and 10 lab caches as well. As always it’s a very enjoyable caching day out particularly for those who haven’t seen the containers at the previous Halloween events. The night caches were awarded Geocache of the Week by Groundspeak. A great achievement!
