Arte Daria, the artist of the millennium

It was through a number of coincidences that Daría González Torres first became involved in art. Born and raised in Puerto Vallarta, as a child Daría was interested in music and wanted to become a concertista – a concert pianist. When she was seventeen, she was an exchange student for a year in North Dakota. She says, For some reason, I couldn’t get into the music class [at the new school], so I joined the art class. When I met Mrs. Snavely, I really liked her philosophy of art and how she was combining that with her philosophy of life. We bonded. The following summer, Daría worked as an assistant in her fathers dentist office back in Vallarta. It was here that she met sculptor Carlos Terres, one of her fathers patients, who told her about the five-year Artes Plásticas (Visual Arts) program at the University of Guadalajara. That same summer, Daría applied and was accepted into the program.

Daría draws inspiration from shape, color, texture, how materials look in relation to their environment, and the complexity of their forms. She’s also been influenced by a number of contemporary artists – the pigmented wooden sculptures of Peruvian Aldo Shiroma, the natural forms and simple lines of Italian Emanuela Camacci, and the experimental mix of painting and sculpting of Carlos Terres. Daría also cites her father-in-law Pierre Tessier as an influence.
As for the future, Darías long-term goal is to join and become an active member of the International Symposium of Monumental Sculpture.
