Even though the year of the dragon, or naga as it is referred to in Thailand, is long gone, you need not worry that this would mean you will experience less luck at any gambling site or land-based casino. In fact, all gambling practices are based on sheer luck and no zodiac sign or time of day could change that. Another important point is to keep in mind that gambling should be a fun activity and not a cause of stress.

In this Guide, we’ll give you an overview of how you can get started playing Blackjack – a sort of introduction to the game if you are a noob and need some guidance before betting your whole bankroll and losing it. This guide can be applied to online and offline blackjack games.

Card Values

Let’s start with the first things first – the value of the cards you need to learn. This is pretty basic and you should be able to understand it easily. The ace is valued at either 11 or 1, all the face cards will give you 10 and other cards’ value is based on what is displayed on it. A 5 of hearts will, therefore, earn you 5 points, and so on.

The objective of blackjack is to accumulate the total of 21 in your hand. If your cards total value adds up to more than 21, you are bust and lose. The player whose cards are the closest or matches the objective score of 21 wins.

The Game

The game starts with each player placing their bets on the table. Once this is done, the dealer shuffles and deals each player including him or herself a card which is seen by everyone. Another card is dealt with each player, still face-up and the dealer takes another card which is not visible to the other players. The game starts with the player on the left who has to decide whether to hit or stand (get another card to have a total closer to 21, or keep his cards), and this is repeated with each player. The game continues until there is a winning player with a total of 21 or blackjack.

A great beginner’s strategy is to stand when you reach a total of 17 with the cards in your hand. Or, a safe bet at least. Remember that an ace can be counted as a 1 or an 11.
