Top tips for choosing a family ski resort

With so many amazing places to choose from, finding the right resort for your family ski holiday can take time. But knowing what to look for makes it a whole lot easier. Here are our top tips to help you decide.

1. Go for a smaller resort

Staying in a smaller Resort means you can get around in no time and save your energy for skiing. All the shops and restaurants will be within easy reach, and you won’t have far to walk to the ski lifts either – which is especially handy if you’re carrying your child’s gear too. If you’re with older teens, they can explore by themselves without you worrying they’ll be too far away. And it’ll be easy to meet up again for lunch or at the end of the day.

2. And a smaller ski area

They say good things come in small packages – and that can definitely be true when it comes to ski areas. Most young kids won’t have the stamina to ski all day, so they won’t be able to make the most of a bigger mountain. Instead, look for resorts with dedicated family zones, beginner-friendly runs, fun slopes and free nursery areas.

Sticking to a smaller range of runs can also help children progress quicker. They’ll get familiar with the terrain, so they can build their confidence and focus on improving their skills.

3. Choose one with lots of other activities

When you’re not skiing, the whole family can get stuck into other winter activities. Cuddle up in a horse-drawn sleigh, dash through the forest on a husky sled or ramp up the adrenaline on a snowmobile safari. And if you’re heading to Finland, you can make Christmas dreams come true with a visit to the man himself – Santa.

Lots of resorts also have indoor activities, from leisure centres and swimming pools, to bowling alleys. And wherever you go, you can always head outside to play in the snow.

4. And pick one with a short transfer

Eager to get on the mountain as soon as possible? Choose a resort with a short transfer, to minimise how long you have to spend on a coach. Just remember to bring along some games and snacks for the drive, and you’ll be there before the kids can even think about getting bored.

If you’d rather avoid winding mountain roads, take a look at Austria – many of the resorts there are along the bottom of valleys so they’re easier to get to.

5. Grab a great deal

Keep an eye out for deals to get an amazing family trip that won’t break the bank. Things like lift pass deals and single parent offers can add up to serious savings. And you can get some of the best bargains by booking as early as possible – which also means you’ll get the widest choice of dates and accommodation.
