At 3:26 p.m., rescue teams reached the scene and confirmed that the hunter had passed away.

The all-volunteer professionals at Mountain Rescue Aspen were instrumental in the recovery efforts, which were complicated by the rugged terrain and remote location. By 7:26 p.m., all rescue personnel had completed their operations and returned from the field.
This tragic event underscores the inherent risks of backcountry excursions, where difficult terrain and remote locations can extend rescue times. Pitkin County officials remind those heading into the wilderness to be mindful of their physical limits and to be prepared for the unique challenges posed by Colorado’s rugged backcountry.
Lessons Learned and Safety Tips:
- Know your limits: Ensure you are physically prepared for the exertion and elevation changes common in the backcountry.
- Carry a communication device: Tools like Garmin InReach can be lifesaving in remote areas with limited cell service.
- Have a guide or partner: Traveling with someone experienced can help mitigate risks and ensure quicker action in emergencies.
- Understand rescue timelines: Due to the difficulty of terrain, reaching those in need can take longer than expected.
