PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO – A hiker on the West Maroon Trail fell nearly 100 feet, sustaining a head injury, on September 6, 2024, prompting a rapid response from Mountain Rescue Aspen. The incident was first reported at 11:12 a.m. via a 911 text message to the Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center.
Shortly after the initial report, a second hiker, who was with the injured individual, contacted dispatchers, confirming that the injured person could walk. Nevertheless, Mountain Rescue Aspen deployed a team at 12:30 p.m. to ensure the hiker could safely exit the area.
Rescue teams made contact with the hiker around 1:35 p.m. on the West Maroon Trail. After evaluation, the hiker was able to walk out of the field under their own power, with all rescue teams exiting by 2:57 p.m.
The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to Mountain Rescue Aspen’s volunteer team for their quick response. The sheriff’s office also reminded hikers to plan routes thoroughly and bring reliable two-way communication devices when venturing into the backcountry.
