PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO — A hiker with a leg injury was successfully rescued from the East Maroon Trail on Thursday, September 5, thanks to the swift response of Mountain Rescue Aspen and other local emergency services. The incident highlights the importance of preparation and emergency communication when venturing into Colorado’s rugged backcountry.
At approximately 4:17 p.m., the Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a call from a hiker who had come across the injured person on the popular East Maroon Trail. Unable to walk due to a leg injury, the injured hiker was stranded without cell service. The caller, upon exiting the Maroon Bells Wilderness and gaining cell signal, alerted authorities.
In response, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office swiftly contacted Mountain Rescue Aspen for assistance. At 4:47 p.m., two rescue teams were deployed. The first team reached the injured hiker by 5:28 p.m. and began the evacuation process.
The hiker was transported safely to the East Maroon Portal by 6:07 p.m., where they were handed over to Aspen Ambulance personnel. From there, the injured individual was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital for further treatment.
The stretch of the East Maroon Trail where the incident occurred is a scenic, but challenging, loop that connects with Maroon Lake. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office praised the all-volunteer Mountain Rescue Aspen team for their professionalism and readiness, as well as the Aspen Ambulance District for their rapid support.

Hikers venturing into the backcountry are reminded that rescues, even when initiated quickly, can take significant time. It’s essential to be prepared with the right equipment and supplies, especially in areas with limited or no cell service. Authorities recommend carrying a two-way communication device such as a satellite messenger, in addition to basic safety gear and adequate clothing.
