How to Get Around New York City on Public Transportation

Whether you’re traveling to New York City for the first time or you’ve lived here for years, you may need to know how to get around the city on public transportation. Subway trains are the fastest and most convenient way to get around the city. However, before you hop on the subway, you need to know the basics of subway etiquette. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your trip.

The first thing you should do is determine which subway line is best for your trip. Many of the subway trains are color coded and follow a north-to-south pattern. You’ll find most of the train stations on the same line are located about 8-10 blocks apart. If you’re traveling from Manhattan to Brooklyn, for instance, you’ll need to transfer trains to reach the other borough.

You can also get a MetroCard, which allows you to use the subway system citywide. It costs $2.75, but if you purchase it at a subway station, you can refill your card and avoid the new card fee. You can transfer to local buses with your MetroCard.

You’ll also need to decide whether you want to take the subway in the uptown or downtown direction. Most of the subway lines in Manhattan follow a north-to-south direction. This is the easiest way to get around Manhattan. Taking the subway will get you faster than taking a taxi, but it will also require more walking.

If you’re not sure what route to take, you can always get directions from a conductor at a subway station. Conductors are usually friendly and willing to help you get to where you need to go. They’ll point you to black and white striped boards at the stations.

It’s a good idea to have a city map with you when you travel on public transportation. Most city maps show you the best subway stations near where you’re headed. If you don’t have a map, you can get one for free. You can also print a map or send it via text.

You can also use Google Maps to help you navigate New York City roads. The maps feature service change announcements, as well as service recommendations based on planned service changes. If you’re traveling to New York City for a specific event, you can also use Waze to find your way. Waze also allows you to map out a route and print it out, or even send it to a friend. You can also text the bus stop code to 511123 to receive real-time updates on bus arrivals.

Another great option is Uber. These rides are available both in the city and the outer boroughs. They are popular for people who want a more intimate experience. They are also more budget-friendly than taking a taxi. However, Uber rides are not always available at all times.

If you’re a local or a tourist, you may want to take advantage of the NYC Ferry system. This waterway transportation network has a number of stops in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Bronx. Using the NYC Ferry will allow you to travel uptown, downtown, and even across the Hudson River.
